5. Reflection:
a. This activity is very special to me because it sets the tone of the
environment that students and the educator will have to share for the next
school year. I love this activity as an ice breaker where as Fifth Graders,
they are starting to dig beneath the surface and really get to know others
and are encouraged to accept everyone’s differences. This activity
promotes a safe environment for students to share. An environment free
of racial comments, bullying, etc. but rather acceptances and friendships.
Throughout the activity, students are listening to what other students have
to say about their background and later reflecting by summarizing their
thoughts in a paragraph. The strengths of this activity is the environment
that is being created by evaluating differences and accepting them. The
weakness of this activity might be parent-child conflict as the child might
be taught differently at home than they are at school about certain
backgrounds. Parents could be teaching prejudice to children which can
conflict with the promotion of acceptance in the classroom. What I love
about this activity is the confidence students gain by presenting
themselves to the classroom because in the long-run, students will be
more comfortable to ask for help when they need it.
