Al al-Bayt University Course name: Architectural Design (3)

Faculty of Engineering Course number: 703321

Architecture Department Course time: Sunday and Tuesday: 11:00 – 17:00
Perquisite: Architectural Design (2) – 703222
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Introduction
It is no wonder then that design has come to be seen as an interdisciplinary field of study.
Design is the creation of a plan or convention for the construction of an object, system or
measurable human interaction as in architectural blueprints. Design is a roadmap or a
strategic approach for someone to achieve a unique expectation (Don Kumaragamage,
2011). Some of the design options were good-looking, but others seemed institutional.
Today, there are so many stylish, beautiful, good-sense universal-design options that
choosing them has become a "why not?" rather than a "why?" decision (Jordan, 2008). In
order to master the foundation of architecture design. The student must first master the
basic building blocks of its language; the definitions, function, and usage (Simitch and
Warke, 2014). This will be effectively achieved in this course through the application of the
key aspects, related to architectural design process, such as: principles, aims, elements
and criteria. These issues will be investigated by your project design throughout this
semester.

Course description
The course aims to present the main architectural design principles and use the
methodological approach in analyzing sites and case studies, therefore it offers the design
concept and also it deals with similar spatial relationships. Moreover, this course examines
the functional and sensitive relations for the architectural form and develops of intuition
to take a reference using direct and indirect representation. This gives an opportunity to
the student to recognize how to deal with the main issues relating architectural design. It
enables the student to understand the requirements related to buildings as architectural
forms consists of identified functions where they have relations each other. This will be
done through raising the most important theories and concepts addressing design issues
and applying them by student’s projects design throughout this semester.

Course objective
In order to master the foundation of architecture, the student must first master the basic
building blocks of its language; the definitions, function, and usage. The main purpose of
this course is to enable the student to understand and absorb the key architectural design
criteria through extrapolating the main needs of a site to be addressed by development
processes. The student in this course will be developed by getting more knowledge,
experience and skills as shown in the table below:

Course content and methodology

The course will focus on the theoretical and practical sides relating design in parallel,
where there will be 1 hour for raising the theoretical framework of this course and 3 hours
for practical work inside studios weekly. In the beginning of this course, it will focus on the
theoretical sides which support to begin design process. This will be achieved through
presenting lectures related to the project issues. For practical work, there will be
following-up to the students individually. This will be through taking discussions between
students and supervisors.
