• What was the vision that Dante had before his exile?

The vision of Dante before his exile is when he wrote the epic poem ‘’The Divine Comedy’’,
which comprises sections representing the three tiers of the Christian afterlife: Purgatory, Heaven and
Hell. This poem, a great work of medieval literature and considered the greatest work of literature
composed in Italian, is a philosophical Christian vision of mankind’s eternal fate.

• Who is the Infernal Judge and how does he assign each soul with eternal life?

King Minos was the Infernal Judge of the damned, He sits at the entrance to the second circle in
the inferno, which is the beginning of hell proper. There, He judges the sins of each soul and assigns it to
its rightful punishment by indicating the circle to which it must descend. He does this by circling his tail
around his own body the appropriate number of times.

• Tell how the punishments of the souls in hell were commensurate to the sins they committed on
earth.

Those who sinned while on earth are justly condemned to different levels of punishments in hell,
relative to their sins on earth. Each of the nine circles of hell represents a worse sin, and therefore, a
crueler punishment.

• Who among the souls Dante caught his attention? Why?

The soul that got Dante’s attention was Virgil, because he was the sinner crucified on the ground,
so that the lead-bearing spirits walked over him.
• Why do you think the author used the title ‘’Divine Comedy’’ for the selection?

The author used the title Devine Comedy because it accomplished what it set out to do in terms
of giving meaning to the religious pilgrim wondering how to account for the ‘’Lost’’ nature of mankind.

• Why is ‘’Divine Comedy’’ considered a political poem?

Because the Divine Comedy frequently alludes to the political turmoil that was prevalent
throughout 14th century Italy, specifically, the city of Florence.

• Explain why the ‘’Divine Comedy’’ is called a vision.

Because Dante’s Divine Comedy describes the 6 layers of hell and the 7 areas of heaven. In a very
literal sense, it can therefore be described as a vision of afterlife. One step removed, it is also a
reflection upon society at the time (Early Italian Renaissance), where the description of hell reflects
social ills and the description of heaven could be named a vision of an enlightened future.
