The Effect of Different Opening Configuration in Multi-Story RC Building With Shear Wall

This study investigates the effects of different opening configurations in shear walls on multi-story reinforced concrete buildings subjected to seismic loads. Shear walls provide lateral stiffness and strength to resist earthquake and wind loads but openings weaken them. The study uses computer modeling to analyze a 30-story building with shear walls containing various opening arrangements. Results show that period, displacement, base shear, story drift, and stress distribution around openings depend on the opening configuration. Key parameters like stiffness, strength, and response are affected by the locations and sizes of openings in the shear walls.

THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT OPENING

CONFIGURATION IN MULTI-STORY RC BUILDING

WITH SHEAR WALL
Shear walls are effective structural elements used mainly in multi-story buildings to
provide resistance against lateral loadings such as earthquake and wind loadings. They
have high plane stiffness and strength which can be used to simultaneously resist large
horizontal loads while also supporting gravity loads. Hence it is necessary to determine
effective and ideal locations of shear walls. Shear wall arrangement must be absolutely
accurate, if not, it may cause negative effects instead. A shear wall may contain many
openings due to the functional requirements such as doors and windows, which may
largely affect the overall seismic response of the structure. In this project, a study has
been carried out to determine the effects of combination of shear walls positions and also
the optimum structural configuration of multi-storey buildings by providing the shear
wall with different openings configuration. This study is carried out on a G+30 story
frame shear wall building, with the help of computer application software ETABS, using
Response Spectrum method. The comparative results showed that the, time period, top
displacement, base shears, story drift and stress distribution around the openings depend
on the opening arrangement system. Keywords— Shear Wall, Staggered Openings,

Lateral Stiffness of Shear Walls with Openings

This technical note investigates the accuracy of a simplified hand method recommended
in several design guidelines for practicing structural engineers for calculating the lateral
stiffness of shear walls with openings. Parametric studies are performed in which the
location and size of the opening as well as the aspect ratio of the wall are varied. Toward
this goal, a special-purpose finite-element algorithm is developed and implemented in the
computing package MATLAB. Results from finite-element analysis are compared to
those of the hand method. It is found that the hand method, despite its complexity, is
highly approximate and often enormously overestimates the stiffness of shear walls with
openings.

Nonlinear finite element dynamic analysis of squat shear

wall with openings
... Sometimes openings are provided in the shear wall due to functional requirements. The
structural behavior of the shear wall with opening becomes complex due to the stress
concentration near the openings (Neuenhofer 2006). Many experimental investigations
have been performed on reinforced concrete shear walls with and without openings
subjected to severe dynamic earthquake loading conditions (Mo 1988;Ricci et al.
2012;Gasparani et al. 2013). ...

Shear wall has been considered as a major lateral load-resisting element inmultistoried
building located in wind- or earthquake-prone zone. The behavior ofshear wall under
various loading conditions has been the subject of intenseresearch for the last few
decades. The behavior of shear walls without openingsis completely well understood and
well documented in literature. The use ofsquat shear wall has been found in many low-
rise buildings. On the other hand, squat shear walls may also be provided with openings
due to the functionalrequirement such as placement of doors/windows in the building.
The size andlocation of the opening play a significant role in the response of the
shearwall. Even though it is intuitively known that the size of opening hassignificant
effects on the behavior of a shear wall, it is desirable to know thelimiting size of opening
in the shear wall, beyond which the shear walls mayfail or become unserviceable,
especially when subjected to severe earthquakeground motions. In this study, the
materially nonlinear dynamic response of theshear wall, with and without openings for
different damping ratios, subjected toEL Centro earthquake has been captured. For
dynamic analysis, constantacceleration Newmark β method of direct time integration has
been used. From the study, it was observed that the presence of opening results in
severedisplacements and stresses on the shear wall and also results in stressconcentration
near the opening tip. Hence, the presence of damping has beenconsidered to be vital for
large opening under severe dynamic loadingconditions.
Effects of opening in shear walls of 30- storey building
Tall towers and multi-storey buildings have fascinated mankind from the beginning of
civilization, their construction being initially for defense and subsequently for
ecclesiastical purposes. These tall buildings because of its height, is affected by lateral
forces due to wind or earthquake actions tends to snap the building in shear and push it
over in bending. In general, the rigidity (i.e. Resistance to lateral deflection) and stability
(i.e. Resistance to overturning moments) requirement become more important. Shear
walls (Structural walls) contribute significant lateral stiffness, strength, and overall
ductility and energy dissipation capacity. In many structural walls a regular pattern of
openings has to be provided due to various functional requirements such as to
accommodate doors, windows and service ducts. Such type of openings reduces the
stiffness of the shear wall to some extent depending on the shape and size of the opening.
In the present parametric study, efforts are made to investigate and critically assess the
effects of various size of openings in shear walls on the responses and behaviors of multi-
storey buildings. The 30 storey Prototype buildings with different types of openings in
shear wall with and without incorporating the volume of shear wall reduced in the
boundary elements are analyzed using software E-TABS using Response spectrum
method (1893(Part-1)-2002) and Time history method .

Numerical Investigation on Concrete Shear Wall with

Different Percentages of Openings
investigation was carried out in order to determine the efficiency of a RCC shear wall
system for a ten storey building of two different thicknesses with different percentage of
openings in it. The shear wall was designed based on Indian standards using Etabs
Software. A total of ten models were considered for this study, out of which five are of
125 mm thickness shear wall and the rest are of 150 mm thickness shear wall. These were
modelled using ETABS software .The five models are bare frame, complete shear wall,
Shear wall with 5% opening, shear wall with 20% opening and with 50% opening.
Comparisons were made between bare frame, 125 mm thick complete shear wall and 150
mm thick complete shear wall. Also in 125 and 150 mm walls comparisons were made
between the bare frame and complete shear wall models. The parameters considered for
the comparisons were Lateral displacement, Base shear and Lateral storey forces. It was
found that the displacements were well within the permissible limit and the shear wall
with 150 mm thickness and 20% opening was found to be the most efficient.

Study on Dynamic Behaviour of Shear walls with Staggered

Openings in Irregular R.C. Framed Structures
In this paper, an attempt is made to discovering the behavior of shear wall with a
different pattern of openings under earthquake loads. Many buildings now a day‟s have
irregular arrangements, both in plan and elevation. That courses the structures with
undesirable distributions in their stiffness of the building. These unpremeditated changes
in structural stiffness are courses bad impact to the buildings. The reason behind the lack
of the seismic behavior of the structure is the plan irregularity or vertical irregularity
present in it. The shear walls are the best and simple methods to sustain these lateral
forces. And they provide required strength against seismic forces. Sometimes a shear wall
may include openings due to the functional needs such as doors and windows. This study
is carried out on plan irregular structures with shear wall contain staggered and regular
openings. Analysis has been done to estimate the behavior of plan irregular structures
when introducing the different pattern of openings in shear walls, at an advantageous
position. The parameters considered are storey displacement, storey drift, storey shear
and stress distributions that concern with the pattern of the openings. The dynamic
analysis is carried out with the help of ETABS v 15 by using response spectrum method.
