THOUGHTS CAME TO DEVELOP A CAMPUS FOR OFFERING PROGRAMMES RELATED TO PLANNING,BUILDING


AND CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY,INTERIOR DESIGN,LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AND ENVIRONMENTAL
ISSUES.

SCOOL OF PLANNING WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1972 AND OFFERING PROGRAMMESS RELATED TO


URBAN,REGIONAL PLANNING AND ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING.

SCHOOL OF BUILDING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY WAS DEVELOPMENT IN 1982.

SCHOOL OF INTERIOR DESIGN IN 1991.

CEPT CENTRE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING AND TECHNOLOGY WA ESTABLISHED BY AHMEDABAD


EDUCATION AND IT WAS REGISTERED IN 1994 AS A SEPARATE PUBLIC CHARITABLE TRUST.

CAMPUS WITHOUT WALLS, LEARNING WITHOUT BOUNDARIES

THE FOUNDERS OF THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE HAD A MOST DARING AND UNUSUAL PERCEPTION OF THEIR TASK.
THEY EMPHASIZED LEARNING RATHER THAN TEACHING, AND SAW THE PLACE OF LEARNING AS ONE WHERE THERE WERE
NO BOUNDARIES, NO HIERARCHIES AND A COMPLETE ATMOSPHERE OF FREE AND UNHAMPERED INQUIRY.

THE BUILDINGS ARE ORGANISED AS DOUBLE STOREYED LINEAR MASSES,OPEN FROM BOTH SIDES,LETTING IN PLENTY
OF LIGHT AND VENTILATIONS INO THE STUDIOS.
IN ADDITION THERE ARE INCLINED SKYLIGHT ON TOP OF THE STUDIOSS,LETTING IN NATURAL LIGHT INTO THE
SPACES.
THE STUDIO SPACES HAVE SPACES FACING THE EXTERIOR,CREATING SEMI PRIVATE SPACES WHICH ARE YET TOTALLY OPEN
TO THE EXTERIOR SPACES WHERE THE INDIVITUAL CAN BE ALONE WITH.

STUDIOS
THE STUDIOS HAVE LARGE OPENING WHICH OPEN INTO THE GREENARY OUSIDE.

PANELS AT THE SIDES HELP THE STUDENTS TO PUT UP THE IMPORTANT AND USEFUL SHEETS.

THE STUDIOS ARE DESIGNED KEEPING IN MIND THE CLIMATIC NEEDS AND COMFORT OF ITS USERS.
THE BUILDING SECTION AND DOUBLE HEIGHT STUDIOS ARE WELL CONCEIVED TO FACILITATE AIR FLOW.

THE BUILDING OS ORIENTED ALONG THE EAST WEST AXIS WITH OPENINGS ON NORTH AND SOUTH AND
THICKWALLS ARE PROVIDED ON THE EAST AND WEST TO KEEP OFF HOT SUN.

PLANNING OF CEPT
THE BUILT FORM STARTS WITH A PAIR OF PARALLEL WALLS.THE BASIC COMPONENT OF THE BUILDING OF
THE CEPT IS A DERIVATE OF LOAD BEARING WALLS,SUPPORTING A FLAT FLOOR SLABS.THE REPEATED
OCCURANCE OF PARALLEL WALLED STRUCTURES CAN BE SEEN IN THE CEPT CAMPUS.

THE OVERALL PLANNING HAS BEEN DONE AROUND THE CENTRAL COURT WITH THE BUILT MASSES ON SIDES
AND GREEN ON ONE SIDE WHICH GIVES THE CAMPUS NOISE PROTECTION.

THE BUILDING IS TWO STOREYED WITH A SPLIT LEVEL BASEMENT.

THE BUILDING DESIGN INCORPORTES THE THERMAL COMFORT.

THE LIBRARY IS AT ONCE A BUILT MANIFESTATION OF THE UNIVERSITY’S ONGOING SHIFT
AWAY FROM A TRADITIONALLY PRESCRIPTIVE PEDAGOGY TOWARD A CHOICE BASED
CURRICULUM, AS WELL AS A DEMONSTRATION OF PASSIVE CLIMATE MITIGATION STRATEGIES
IN ARCHITECTURE. COMPLETE WITH AN OPERATING MANUAL FOR STUDENTS, THE BUILDING’S
MODULATED, LOUVERED FACADE CAN BE MANUALLY ADJUSTED TO ALLOW IN LESS LIGHT OR
MORE VENTILATION IN RESPONSE TO AHMEDABAD’S SEVERELY HOT AND DRY CLIMATE.
