1. What are fossils?


Ans. Fossils are the remains of ancient plants and animals like bones, footprints, feathers,
leaf prints etc. that got buried in sedimentary rocks several years ago.
2. How are sedimentary rocks formed?
Ans. Sedimentary rocks are formed by the accumulation of sediments like mud, pebbles,
gravel, sand etc on the beds of rivers and oceans in layers. These sediments gradually
hardens to form rocks.
3. Define mineral.
Ans. The inorganic substances found in the rocks in the form of crystals are called
minerals.
4. How is coal formed?
Ans. Coal is formed from the dead plants and trees that got buried under the soil several
years ago. This plant material were subjected to great heat and pressure, after millions
of years they changed into coal.
5. Mention two uses of coal.
Ans. 1. Coal is used as a fuel for cooking food and in thermal powerhouses to produce
electricity.
2. Coal is used for the manufacture of coal gas, pitch etc.
6.Explain the formation of petroleum.
Ans. a) Petroleum is formed from the decomposition of organic matter, both animals
and vegetables (plants) which got buried under the soil millions of years ago.
b) The chemicals in them got converted into Petroleum.
7. Mention some uses of rocks and minerals.
Ans 1. Rocks like marble, granite, stones etc are used as building materials.
2.The precious stones obtained from rocks like diamond, rubies, emeralds etc are
used in ornaments.
3.Minerals like nitrate, phosphate, sulphate etc are used as fertilizers in soil to get

high yield of crops.
