Lesson 2- WHAT IS LOCAL HISTORY?

Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
1. manifest interest in local history and cultural heritage;
2. apply historiographical methods in writing the history of
one’s locality or country;
3. display the ability to write a life history.

Introduction
This lesson discusses about the meaning as well as the
value, and goals of local and oral history. The students will have a
better understanding of doing local and oral history. It will also
lead them to comprehend that local and oral history is a primary
source material obtained to capture and preserve first-hand
information of life stories or events that would otherwise be lost.

Activity 1 Journal Writing

Write a journal with the following information in each


paragraph.

Write about your delicious delicacies in your locality.

Philippines are known for having variety of delicacies
which used different cooking techniques but all native food are
tasty and delicious. The common native delicacies is kakanin.
Kakanin is also very saleable particularly in Bislig City. Young and
old people prefer to buy kakanin for their merienda. The saleable
kakanin are Biko, Puto, Cassava Cake, Suman, Ube, Bibingka, Maha
Blanca and etc. In the city of Bislig, people here would buy these
snacks because it is delicious and affordable.
Bislig City got its name from a vine of rattan family that
grow in abundance along the banks of its river. This vine called
Bislig was noted for its strength and became know for saving a
royal couple who crossed the swollen river in one of their hunting
expeditions and who almost died as they were carried
downstream by the rushing current.
Analysis
1. What are your bases in writing the journal?

Knowing the delicious delicacies in Bislig or through


eyewitness and studying the origin of Bislig or its local
history. For the first paragraph, I use primary source.
For the second paragraph, I use secondary source. I
did research online to get important information about
the history of Bislig.

2. Do you think it is essential to write about the history of


your place? Why? Or Why not?
Local History is the study of the everyday struggles and
triumphs of ordinary people. The study of local topics
allows in depth research to connect the past with the
present which is done more simply and with more
meaning. It is very important for the reason that it let us
know the different stories during that time and it would
help us to access information about the past. This is for
us to appreciate our grandparents or our heroes in the
past that would give us an idea about them. Also, for us
to continue their journey and what are the changes we
would want to apply. There are also many lesson learns
from the history of the past that would help the current
people to adjust and avoid the certain problem.
