Earth is the only planet in our solar system that has a large amount of liquid
water. About 74% of the surface of Earth is covered by liquid or frozen water.
Because of this, people sometimes call it the blue planet. Because of its
water, Earth is home to millions of species of plants and animals.

 Our home planet provides us with life and protects us from space. Earth, our
home planet, is a world unlike any other. The third planet from the sun, Earth is the
only place in the known universe confirmed to host life.

A special planet: the habitable Earth

It is the right distance from the Sun, it is protected from harmful solar radiation
by its magnetic field, it is kept warm by an insulating atmosphere, and it has the right
chemical ingredients for life, including water and carbon.

Life on Earth
Earth is the only planet in the universe known to possess life. The planet
boasts several million species of life, living in habitats ranging from the bottom of the
deepest ocean to a few miles into the atmosphere. And scientists think far more
species remain to be discovered.

What conditions are necessary for life on Earth?

Life on Earth uses only two types of energy for metabolism: sunlight and
redox chemistry ... One or the other has to be present, and if you're in the habitable
zone of a star, you at least have enough light to support photosynthesis. So you
have the right temperature, water, and sunlight.

The Earth is located in the “habitable zone” not too close and not too far
around the sun. One degree closer to the sun would be too hot, and one degree
farther would be too cold. The Earth is located just on its right orbit.

Earth has an insulating atmosphere to protect the surface from harmful

electromagnetic radiations from the sun. Oxygen doesn’t get burned due to 78% of
nitrogen present in the atmosphere, and 20% oxygen is just enough for us to
breathe.

A Special Planet: The Habitable Earth!

Earth consists of land, air, water and life. The land contains mountains,
valleys and flat areas. The air is made up of different gases, mainly nitrogen and
oxygen. The water includes oceans, lakes, rivers, streams, rain, snow and ice.
What makes the Earth habitable? It is the right distance from the Sun, it is
protected from harmful solar radiation by its magnetic field, it is kept warm by an
insulating atmosphere, and it has the right chemical ingredients for life, including
water and carbon. The processes that shape the Earth and its environment
constantly cycle elements through the planet. This cycling sustains life and leads to
the formation of the mineral and energy resources that are the foundation of
modern technological society.
The Earth’s resources are many and varied. Some are illustrated by the
samples shown here. Coal has long been an important and abundant source of

energy, salt is a nutrient necessary for life, and gold has been considered precious
throughout human history because of its rarity, malleability, and color.
Collectively, the Sun, its planets, together with other smaller objects, are known as
the Solar System. The main bodies of the Solar System – the Sun and its eight
planets.

FOUR SUBSYSTEMS OF THE EARTH

Earth’s Lithosphere
The lithosphere is the solid, outer part of the Earth.
The lithosphere includes the brittle upper portion of the mantle and the crust, the
outermost layers of Earth's structure. It is bounded by the atmosphere above and
the asthenosphere (another part of the upper mantle) below.

Earth’s Hydrosphere
The hydrosphere includes water that is on the surface of the planet,
underground, and in the air. A planet's hydrosphere can be liquid, vapor, or ice.
On Earth, liquid water exists on the surface in the form of oceans, lakes and rivers.
Water moves through the hydrosphere in a cycle.
Water moves through the hydrosphere in a cycle. Water collects in clouds,
then falls to Earth in the form of rain or snow. This water collects in rivers, lakes and
oceans. Then it evaporates into the atmosphere to start the cycle all over again.

Earth’s Atmosphere

Earth's atmosphere is composed of about 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent

oxygen, 0.9 percent argon, and 0.1 percent other gases. Trace amounts of carbon
dioxide, methane, water vapor, and neon are some of the other gases that make up
the remaining 0.1 percent.
Within the boundary of the Earth is a collection of four interdependent parts
called “spheres“: the lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere. This
two-way cause and effect relationship between an event and a sphere is called
an interaction. Interactions also occur among the spheres.
Earth’s Biosphere
The biosphere is made up of the parts of Earth where life exists.
The biosphere extends from the deepest root systems of trees to the dark
environment of ocean trenches, to lush rain forests and high mountaintops.

Earth’s Subsystems and their Interactions:

Earth's major systems are the geosphere (solid and molten rock, soil, and
sediments), the hydrosphere (water and ice), the atmosphere (air), and the
biosphere (living things, including humans). These systems interact in multiple
ways to affect Earth's surface materials and processes.
How does the geosphere interact with other Earth systems?
The atmosphere provides the geosphere with heat and energy needed for
rock breakdown and erosion. The geosphere, in turn, reflects the sun's energy back
into the atmosphere. The biosphere
receives gases, heat, and sunlight
(energy) from the atmosphere.
When the Sun's energy moves
through space, it
reaches Earth's atmosphere and finally
the surface. This radiant
solar energy warms the atmosphere
and becomes heat energy. This
heat energy is transferred throughout
the planet's systems in three ways: by
radiation, conduction, and convection.
