Experiment 6 Forces in A Roof Truss

This document outlines an experiment to determine the forces in a roof truss subjected to a central point load using the method of joints, compare the theoretical and experimental values, and discuss factors affecting the experimental results. Tables show the member strains and forces from applying loads from 0-500N, and the objectives include calculating forces theoretically, comparing experimental and theoretical forces, and discussing differences between the two methods. The discussion, conclusion, and references sections provide guidance on analyzing and reporting the results of the experiment.

EXPERIMENT 6 : FORCES IN A ROOF TRUSS WITH A CENTRAL LOAD

1.1 OBJECTIVES
a) Determination of forces in a roof truss subjected to point load.
b) Compare the theoretical and experimental values of the forces in a roof truss. The
theoretical values must be calculated using the Method of Joint.
c) Discuss the factors affecting the results of the experiment.

1.3 CALCULATION
1. You will need the following information Young’s Modulus is the ratio of stress to
strain that is
E= σ
Ɛ
Where,
E= Young’s Modulus ( Nm-2)
σ=Stress in the member ( Nm-2)
Ɛ=Displayed strain
And
σ = F
A
Where,
F = Force in member
A= Cross-sectional area of member
Equivalent member forces at 500 N
Rod diameter =5.98 mm and Esteel = 210 GN/m2

1.4 DISCUSSION
The laboratory report should contain the following.

1. Use the formula above to calculate the force in a roof truss. Use Method Of Joint.
2. Compare the forces in a roof truss by experimentally and theoretically.
3. A discussion/ comments of factors affecting the results of the experiments.
Discuss the percentage of difference between reaction by experimentally and
theoretically.
4. Plot graph the value of reaction experimentally and theoretically.
5. State the importance of reaction in civil engineering.

1.5 CONCLUSION
State that if the objectives of the experiment is achieved.
