Arinduque Tate Ollege Laboratory High School: The Problem and Its Background

This chapter presents the background and objectives of the study. The study aims to compare the 2D and 3D animation techniques to understand their advantages and disadvantages, and determine which is easier and more efficient to use. Specifically, it seeks to understand perceptions of Grade 12 students at Marinduque State College on the two techniques. The scope is limited to comparing the two animation types, and the study will be completed within one month. The results could benefit students, teachers, and future researchers by helping them select the best animation technique.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter will present the background of the study, objective of the study, significance of the study,
scope and delimitation.

Introduction

Animation is extremely popular these days. And why not? Movies like Trolls, Frozen, Kung Fu
Panda, and Finding Nemo have captured the hearts and minds of people around the world and
generated hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue. These movies take us to distant lands, fill us with
wonder at imaginary creatures, and delight us with fanciful physics. Animation refers to the process of
planning, designing, drawing and formulating photographic sequences that are integrated into videos
and gaming. In simple terms, it is the rapid screening of images to create a scene. It makes use of static
images to give an illusion of movement. There are two techniques in animation the 2- dimensional or 2D
and 3- dimensional or 3D.

According to the article written by Varun Mehta, he wrote the difference between the two
techniques in animation which are the 2D and 3D animation software. You must have played classic
arcade games like Mario Bros., Donkey Kong and Sonic; but you must be wondering what the connection
between these games and animation is? Well, these games are excellent examples of 2D animation. 2D
animation is also known as traditional animation and refers to the process of creating motion in a two-
dimensional space. It consists of multiple elements such as foregrounds, backgrounds and characters
that help in adding an illusion of depth. Traditional animation has been in existence since the invention
of the first motion camera. This form of animation was discovered by accident when a camera was
stopped for a few seconds and then the recording was again resumed. When this was done, it showed
that the recorded material would suddenly ‘jump’. On the other hand, 3D animation involves animating
characters and objects in a three-dimensional space. Characters and objects in this form of animation
have volume, depth and can be rotated and moved. The depth in 3D animation actually exists unlike just
the illusion in 2D animation. 3D animation has great popularity in movies, games and virtual reality. 3D
animation is also known as CGI animation and lights and cameras can also be animated in this variation
of animation. This form of computer animation also makes use of frames.

Due to the pandemic we are facing nowadays, DepEd implemented the Blended learning
method on every private and public schools to avoid the spreading of this Corona virus throughout the
country. Due to the non face to face learning, Grade 12 ICT students of Marinduque State College had
some stuggles to their major subjects. Because almost of Grade 12 ICT students have no laptop can be
used for the online learning, and it is truly hard for them to cope up with every lessons especially on
their major subjects wherein laptop are very crucial and the first thing they need for these. So they have
no other choice but to make the activities required by the teacher to do manually unlike before when
there is still face to face learning even they have no laptop to use they can go to the computer
laboratory of the school to do their activities. So Grade 12 ICT students of Marinduque State College
really had some struggles with these past few months. And because these students already experienced
how to used these two types of animation techniques which are the 2D and 3D animation, we would like
to know their perceptions about these two types of animation techniques. So that was the reason why
we had made a decision to conduct this study.

In this research, researchers will have comparison between the 2D and 3D animation software.
We would like to find out what are the advantages and disadvantages of 2D and 3D animation software,
which of these two is much easier, and most efficient to use.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The main objective of the study is to make a comparison between the 2D and 3D animation techniques
to know if what are their advantages and disadvantages, which of these two is the most efficient and
easier to use.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following:

1. To know what are their advantages and disadvantages

2. To know the perceptions of randomly selected Grade 12 ICT students of Marinduque State College if
which between these two is the most easier to use and

3. The most efficient

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The coverage of this study is to have comparison between these two techniques of animation in order to
know their advantages and disadvantages and which one is the most efficient and easier to use in
animating and modeling different objects. This study is primarily concern and is limited to the two types
of animation techniques. Animation software programs and its uses are not included in this study. The
duration on making this study would take a month to finish.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of the study will be beneficial to the following:

ICT Students. It will help them in choosing which one is better to use on animating and also in modeling
different objects.

ICT Teachers. Teachers will have an idea of which is really more effective to use in teaching students and
easy for them to learn between these two techniques of animation.

Future Researchers. It will provide relevance material for the other researchers undertaking similar
research. The study will help researchers with more information on making comparison between these
two techniques of animation.
