Human Rights - The Taliban

By: Edrees, Aidan, Rishi.

Who are they?
● Are a faction that plays a major part in the Afghan civil
war
● It largely consists of students (the Pashto word for a
student is Talib which is where they get their name
from) who have been educated in Islamic schools and
fought during the soviet afghan war
● Most of its members are Pashtun, which is the largest
ethnic group in Afghanistan
● They seized the capital, Kabul in September 1996
● The Afghan police and other people are still there
today, it's just that they are outnumbered and
overpowered by the Taliban.
What is their goal?
● To impose its interpretation of Islamic law on
Afghanistan and remove foreign influences of any kind
from the country
● They do this through violent forces
● Some of the strict laws they have in place are:
○ Women must wear head to toe coverings and are
not allowed to attend school, work, or travel alone
○ No media or holidays from any other country

● This is like them rejecting globalization and trying to

keep their own culture alive, like when japan isolated
itself from the world
● They believe that what they are doing is in the name of
god and that they are doing it the correct way.
Where are they?
● The Taliban are in Afghanistan
● They slowly grew their influence over the country over time
● In november 1994 they seized the city of Kandahar and in september
1996 they seized the capital: Kabul
● In 1996 their leader forges a relationship with the leader of a
terrorist group (Osama Bin Laden), who then moves his base of
operations to Kandahar
● Then in August 1998 they captured the city of Mazar-E-Sharif, which
got them control of about 90% of the country
● It's around 2001 when America starts attacking, that they lose the
city of Kandahar
● They don't seize too much more land until 2015 when the Afghan
police says that they have captured the Afghan provincial capital of
Kinduz where they free 500 inmates from a prison and they capture
Sangin which is a an important city
● Their huge influence over the country continues to grow today
When
● They emerged in 1994
● In 1996 they took over control of
Afghanistan
● Over their time ruling over the country,
they have killed many people and led
several attacks on Afghanistan and other
countries
● 9/11 is an example of an attack from the
Taliban
Why do they do what they do?
● The Taliban forced everyone to follow their interpretation of Islamic
faith in Afghanistan and banned all other faiths
● Many sports and activities that were considered un-Islamic were
banned
● They did all this because they originally wanted to establish an Islamic
government through law and order
● People who joined their ranks earlier on were motivated by the
suffering of people around them
● They thought the suffering was a result of power struggles between
different groups and not abiding by the moral code of islam
● Most of them were Islamic school students so this belief was partially
taught to them
How do they do it
● While the soviet union was invading Afghanistan, a resistance called
the Mujahideen was formed
● This group received weapons and supplied from the CIA and the
government of the United States of America
● They also captured weapons from Soviet forces
● When the soviet union withdrew and the Taliban was formed, they
seized these weapons from them and used them for their own means,
which was to enforce their interpretation of Islamic law on the country
by any means necessary
● They elected a president and had help from other countries to help the
afghan people
● But when they received funds to help the country, they pocketed it
● Afghan government officials put little to no money towards the people
● There are around 150,000 foreign soldiers fighting the Taliban in
Afghanistan right now
Why This is Important to Human Rights?
● Many people die in Afghanistan everyday due to the
ongoing war of the Taliban
● The Taliban are taking away people’s ability to live
with their normal everyday lives
● The Taliban makes takes away people’s freedom of
speech, freedom of religion,
● It's important that we recognize what's going on and
try to assist the people of the country in any way we
can.
How Can Citizens Respond to the Issues?
● By donating to families and giving gifts that will change lives. There's also the
option of deploying in afghanistan, but a donation helps out an individual
family who is struggling more than others
