Computer Ports PDF

Computer ports are connection points that allow peripheral devices to connect to the computer system unit. The main types of ports discussed are Ethernet ports for networking, USB ports for fast data transfer, parallel ports for transferring multiple bits of data at once, serial ports for transferring one bit of data at a time, PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice, and audio jack ports for inputting and outputting sound. The document also provides a brief overview of other computer hardware components like the system unit, motherboard, CPU, RAM, ROM, and buses. It defines computer files and mentions the main types are data files and executable files.

Computer Ports
COMPUTER PORT
IS THE CONNECT POINT OF PERIPHERAL
DEVICE TO THE COMPUTER SYSTEM UNIT.
TYPES OF PORTS
Ethernet ports: connects the PC to
the network through the use of
network cables for communication.
USB (universal serial bus)
• Latest computer ports where data instructions
are transmitted at fast transmission rate.

USB PORTS
Parallel Port
• Multiple bits of Data are transferred at a time
over multiple lines. E.g printer port.

Parallel Port
SERIAL PORT
• One bit of data is transferred one at a time over
one line. Devices that don’t require data
transfers rates use serial ports. E.g VGA port,
mouse

Serial Port
PS/2 PORTS
• Use for mouse and key board connections

PS/2 PORTS
AUDIO JACK PORTS
• Used to output and input sound in and out
the computer.

JACK PORTS
OVERVIEW OF PORTS
COMPUTER HARDWARE
• SYSTEM UNIT: is the rectangular case that houses all the
computer electronic components.
MAIN COMPONENTS OF A SYSTEM
UNIT
• Power supply: converts AC power to DC power
in order to run the computer.
Mother board
• This is a circuit board in the computer that
houses the chips that control the processing
functions. E.g. mother board, processor, RAM,
ROM etc. it’s the heart of the computer.
CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT (CPU)
• Is an electronic device that interprets and
carries out instructions that tell the computer
how to work. E.g pentium 4, Duo-core, corei7
System clock
• Controls how fast all the operations within the
computer are performed. The speed at which
the processor executes instructions is called
Clock speed or clock rate. It is measured in
hertz (Hz). It deals with system date and time
RAM
• It is a temporary memory in a computer that
holds data and instructions in a computer.
rom
• Contains firm ware programs developed by
the manufacturer. A BIOS chip contains
instructions for all input and output devices. A
CMOS stores all instructions set in the BIOS.
Instruction include; system time, boot setting.
A CMOS battery is responsible for the system
timed consistency. BIOS
CMOS
ROM
BUS
• Is an electronic channel that allow other
electric devices to communicate with each
other.
• Buses consist of two parts;
• Data bus: transfers actual data
• Address bus: transfers information about
where data should go in memory
Types of Bus
• System bus: connects the cpu to memory
• Expansion bus: connects the CPU to the
peripheral devices
COMPUTER FILES
Computer Files
• Refers to the collection of data stored on a
storage medium such as hard disk.
TYPES OF FILE
• Data files: contain texts, images and other
data that can be used on a computer.
• Executable files: contains programs or
instructions that tell the computer on how to
perform a given task. These files normally end
up with an extension .EXE. They are set up
files
