- silicon dioxide PS - sand n/a - water PS -air M/solution
2. What is the difference between a solution, suspension and a colloid?
A solution is always transparent and homogeneous and does not settle out.
A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture in which some of the particles settle out of the mixture
upon standing.
A colloid is a heterogeneous mixture in which the dispersed particles are intermediate in size
between those of a solution and a suspension.

3. a) Classify the following as malleable or brittle:

- glass malleable - ice brittle - pottery brittle -gold malleable
b) Classify as conductive or nonconductive:
- copper wire conductive - frying pan conductive - wooden ruler nonconductive
Define physical change and define chemical change.
Physical- a type of change in which the form of matter is altered but one substance is not
transformed into another.
Chemical- Chemical changes occur when a substance combines with another to form a new
substance, called chemical synthesis or, alternatively, chemical decomposition into two or more
different substances.

List 5 words that describe a physical change. List 5 words that indicate a chemical change.
Physical: boiling, clouding, dissolution, freezing, freeze-drying.
Chemical: color change, formation of a precipitate, formation of a gas, odor change,
temperature change

Use the chart to answer questions 5 and 6.

6. Which substance is liquid at -50 °C?

Chlorine

7. What state of matter is Hydrogen in at -100 °C?

Gas

8. Give two examples of when a physical property is used to select a substance for a specific
purpose.
1. identify a material
2. to separate the substances in a mixture.
9. What are three signs of a chemical change? Do they always represent chemical change?
Some signs of a chemical change is a change in color and the formation of bubbles. They always
represent a chemical change.

10. Describe two methods for separating mixtures and tell what would make you use one over the
other.
Mixtures can be separated using various separation methods such as filtration, separating
funnel,sublimation,simple distillation and paper chromatography.

11. Describe the shape and volume of solids, liquids and gases using the words definite and
indefinite:
Solid: definite volume and shape Liquid: definite volume and indefinite shape
Gas: indefinite volume and shape

12. Define the term endothermic and tell how you know when a reaction is endothermic.
Noting or pertaining to a chemical change that is accompanied by an absorption of
heat. must be supplied with heat
13. Define the term exothermic and tell how you know when a reaction is exothermic.
Heat being released or sent out. The opposite of exothermic.

14. Name the following phase changes and tell whether they are endothermic or exothermic:
