How to Enable and Disable Cookies

A cookie is a small amount of data that is generated by a website and saved by the

web browser for the purpose of remembering information about the user’s preferences and to

store login information for specific sites. The purpose of this paper is to describe the steps

taken in enabling and disabling cookies.

To enable cookies on Firefox, click on the ‘menu’ button and click on the ‘options’.

The next step is to click on the ‘privacy and security’ and then select ‘history’. On the drop-

down menu, choose ‘custom settings for history’. Then check the box with the title ‘accept

cookies’ from websites to enable cookies. To disable cookies just uncheck the same box.

Next, choose how long cookies are to be stored and choose until they expire or until Firefox

is closed. Finally, close the preferences page and the settings will be automatically saved

(Hennig, 2018).

To enable cookies on internet explorer 9.0-11.0, click on the ‘gear’ icon on the top bar

of the browser and then click on the ‘internet options’. On the following drop-down menu,

click on ‘privacy’ tab and then choose automatic cookie handling and set the slider bar to

medium level. Then click ‘allow’ and then click ‘okay’. It is also possible to restrict cookies

to selective sites by sliding the bar to ‘high’ and then click ‘sites’. Then type the addresses of

the websites to be restricted and then click ‘block’ and if they are to be allowed, click ‘allow’

and then ‘ok’ (Hennig, 2018).

On the Edge browser, click on the three dots for more actions button at the right-hand

corner, at the top of the web page. Then select ‘settings’ from the drop-down menu and then

click to view ‘advanced settings’ and scroll down to the bottom of the page. Press the drop-

down arrow under the cookies field and then select block all cookies or third-party cookies to

disable or click not to block cookies if the intention is to allow cookies.
