Assignment No. 7 Chemical Engineering Fluid Dynamics Session 2016 Due Date: 16 May-2018 Solve All The Questions. (As A Part of Assessment of CLO3)

This document contains 6 questions related to fluid dynamics for a chemical engineering assignment. The questions cover topics like flow rate calculations using an orifice meter, sizing an orifice for a given pressure difference, power calculations for an agitator turbine, scale up considerations for a mixing system, work calculations for isothermal and adiabatic compressors, and determining efficiency and outlet temperature for an adiabatic compressor. Students are instructed to solve all questions, which are part of assessing specified course learning outcomes.

7 Chemical Engineering Fluid Dynamics

session 2016 Due Date: 16 May-2018
Solve all the questions. (As a part of assessment of CLO3)
1. An orifice meter consisting of 10 cm diameter orifice in a 25 cm diameter pipe has Cd = 0.65.
The pipe delivers oil of sp.gr. = 0.8. The pressure difference on the two sides of the orifice plate
is measured by mercury oil differential manometer. If the differential gauge is 80 cm Hg, find the
rate of flow?
2. Water flow at between 3000-4000 cm3/s through a 75 mm diameter pipe and is metered by
means of an orifice. Suggest a suitable size of orifice if the pressure difference is to be measured
with a simple water manometer. What approximately is the pressure difference recorded at the
maximum flow rate? Cd = 0.6.
3. A turbine agitator with six flat blades and a disk has a diameter of 0.203 m. It is used in a tank with a
diameter of 0.61 m and height of 0.61 m. The width is W = 0.0405 m. Four baffles are used with a width
of 0.051 m. The turbine operates at 275 rpm in a liquid having a density of 909 kg/m3 and viscosity of
0.02 Pas. Calculate the kW power of the turbine and kW/m3 of volume. Scale up this system to a vessel
whose volume is four times as large, for the case of equal mass transfer rate.

4. During liquid makeup production, color pigments (i.e., solid having identical particle size) are added to
the product via a mixer. In the pilot plant, this mixer runs at 6,700 rpm and has a diameter head of 0.035
m. Full-scale production is geometrically similar and has a mixer head diameter of 0.12 m. Determine the
speed of the full-scale production mixer head. What additional information is required for the motor to
drive this mixer? Assume that power curves are available for this mixer design, and the scale-up basis is
constant power/unit volume.

5. A 100 percent efficient compressor is required to compress air from 1 to 3 atm. The inlet
temperature is 68 F. Calculate the work per pound mole for an isothermal compressor and an
adiabatic compressor

6. An adiabatic compressor is compressing air from 20 C and 1 to 4 atm. The air flow rate is 100
kg/hr, and the power required to drive the compressor is 5.3 kW. What are the efficiency of the
compressor and the temperature of the outlet air? What would the outlet air temperature be if the
compressor were 100 percent efficient? Air may be assumed to be a perfect gas with Cp = 29.3
J/(mol .K) and gamma = 1.40.
