1 A simple sample of heights of 6400 Englishmen has a mean of 170 cm and S.D of 6.4 cm, while a simple
sample of heights of 1600 Americans has mean of 172 cm and S.D of 6.3 cm. Do the data indicate that
Americans are on the average taller than Englishmen’s?
2 A company makes a claim that children (between the age group between 7 and 12) who drink their
health drink will grow (height) taller than the children who do not drink that health drink. Data in
Table shows average increase in height over one-year period from two groups: one drinking the health
drink and the other not drinking the health drink. At LoS = 0.05, test whether the increase in height for
the children who drink the health drink as compare to children who don’t drink the health drink.

3 In a certain factory there are two independent processes manufacturing the same item. The average
weight in a sample of 250 items produced from one process is found to be 120 Ozs, with a s.d of 12 Ozs,
while the corresponding figures in a sample of 400 items from the other process are 124 Ozs and 14
Ozs. Is the difference between the two sample means significant?
5 Table shows data on alcohol consumption before and after breakup. Conduct a test to check whether
the alcohol consumption is more after the breakup at 95% confidence (LOS = 0.05).

6 The response times for a random sample of 40 medical emergencies were tabulated. The sample mean
is 13.25 minutes. The population standard deviation is believed to be 3.2 minutes.
The EMS director wants to perform a hypothesis test, with a .05 level of significance, to determine
whether the service goal of 12 minutes or less is being achieved.
7. An automobile tyre manufacturer claims that the average life of a particular grade of tyre is 20000 km
when used under normal conditions. A random sample of 16 tyres was tested and a mean and SD of
22000 km and 5000 km, respectively were computed. Assuming the life of the tyres in km to be
approx.. normally distributed, decide whether the manufacturer’s claim is valid
8. The mean life of a sample of 10 electric bulbs was found to be 1456 hrs with SD of 423 hrs. A second
sample of 17 bulbs chosen from a different batch showed a mean life of 1280 hrs with SD of 398 hrs. Is

9. The average breaking strength of steel rods is specified to be 18.5 thousand kg. For this sample of 14
rods was tested. The mean and sd obtained were 17.85 and 1.955 respectively. Test the significance of
the deviation.
10. Random samples drawn from two places gave the following data relating to the heights of male adults:
Place A Place B
Mean Height (in Inches) 68.5 65.5
S.D (in Inches) 2.5 3

Test at 5% level of significance that the mean height is the same for adults in the two places.
