SITE FINDINGS

• ROAD NETWORK
The road network consists of a series of major routes and minor routes, the
major routes linking to surrounding towns and the minor routes linking the
interior. The major routes include Naalya road, Kiwatule road, Old Kira Road,
and Kigobe Road.
The minor routes such by Ndawula road, Veronica road and many others
have low traffics volumes consisting mainly of private, cyclist and pedestrian
modes.

ROAD NETWORKS
• NAALYA ROAD
Naalya road is a tarmacked of approximate width 8m running from Ntinda to
Naalya round about, a two lane road (single carriageway) with each lane
for a different direction. Different furniture such as street lights and cameras
are along the road alignment. The road lacks curbs, pedestrian and cyclist
lanes with all traffic sharing the same carriageway with pedestrians moving
along the edge of the road posing a safety concern.

KIWATULE ROAD

The road is also tarmacked with a width of approximately 8m linking old Kiira
road to Naalya road. It’s also a two lane road (single carriageway) with
each lane for a different direction and in a similar state as the Naalya road.

NDAWULA ROAD
Ndawula road is a partly tarmacked (asphalt concrete road) of
approximately 5 meters in width. It is a single lane road. This road is used by
low traffic volumes, cyclists and pedestrians. It is about 0.44 kilometers long
and is located in Kiwatule, Kampala. Its within the residential area

FEATURES OF THE ROAD NETWORK

• JUNCTIONS
The junctions which were mostly T junctions included the intersection of old
Kira road, Kiwatule road and Valley road, the partly channelized T junction
connecting Kiwatule road to Mbogo road and one joining Naalya Veronica
roads as one heads towards Naalya round about.

FEATURES OF THE ROAD NETWORK

• FOOTPATHS
The position of footpath was not clearly defined rather pedestrians would
just move along the edge of the pavement c risk to road users.

FEATURES OF THE ROAD NETWORK

• STREET FURNITURE
Street furniture are items placed within the street with the purpose of
directing movement or enhancing its place value and include public art,
lighting, bollards, guardrails, seating and cycle parking.

FEATURES OF THE ROAD NETWORK

• PEDESTRIAN CROSSING
These include such as zebra or signalized crossings
or uncontrolled.
Despite the busy nature of the road network, there
was absence of pedestrian crossing points on most
locations along the road network and those that
were there were faded posed a great risk to the
road users.

DRAINAGE SYSTEMS
Dimensions
The area had trapezoidal open drainage channels whose surfaces are Top: 1.4 m
Bottom: 0.6m
stone pitched. Depth: 0.7 m
These channels accommodate surface run off from storm water especially
from the road surface

SETTLEMENT PATTERNS
• The settlement pattern was mostly linear along major routes and
nucleated in the interior consisting of residential, commercial and mixed
use zones. The commercial and mixed used were mainly located along
the major with the residential in the interior

AMENITIES IN THE AREA

• SAFTEY AND SECURITY

there was no presence of a police post around the area.
Most commercial buildings as well as the private residential areas employed
private security guards.
perimeter walls also enclosed single households as well as apartments.

AMENITIES IN THE AREA

• SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
Therefore, there is commercial waste collection centres where wastes are
collected in dumpsters, bins, packed in polythene bags and small areas set
aside along the road where the waste management firms through their
mobile trucks collect these wastes on designated days and transfer them to
other areas of disposal

AMENITIES IN THE AREA

• ACCESS TO FRESH WATER

Most residential houses as well as commercial buildings receive piped water
for use through a piped system managed by National Water and Sewerage
Corporation for a particular fee.
Some households however harvested rain water and stored in tanks.

INTERVIEWING RESIDENTS AND LEADERS

• RESIDENTS
• Challenges faced by the residents
High costs of living.
Conflict of road usage.
Emphasized need to tarmac roads
Shortage of street lights

INTERVIEWING RESIDENTS AND LEADERS

LEADER
We interviewed The LC of Kiwatule central zone, Mr Kibirege Paul who
stressed more information that solid waste was privately managed. He
added that the area lacked public medical facilities and also expressed his
disappointment in the services provided by KCCA as they were lacking,
inadequate and “boring”. He appreciated our visit and encouraged us to
do better once the responsibility is thrust upon us.

CHALLENGES, RECCOMEDATIONS & CONCLUSIONS

• CHALLENGES
the chairmen of ndawula and naalya areas were not available
Covid 19 pandemic made some people fear to talk to us
We also face a problem of language barrier with some of the communities
members as not many could speak english.

CHALLENGES, RECCOMEDATIONS & CONCLUSIONS

• RECOMMEDATIONS
• The roads should be rehabilitated with clear sidewalks to ensure safety and comfort of the
pedestrians. This can be achieved by designing roads with no open channels such the
drainage space is utilised for both pedestrian walkways and run off water drainage.
• roads markings and furniture should be regularly replaced which also promote road safety
and legibility.
• unpaved roads and those not completely paved forexample Ndawula road should be
upgraded to paved road. this will solve the dust problem and congestion of traffic at peak
hours because they will attract to be used as a distributor road.
• KCCA should place garbage collection bins along roads to handle solid wastes generated
by road users.
• National water and sewerage corporation and UMEME should efficient their emergency
response and seviellence teams.

CHALLENGES, RECCOMEDATIONS & CONCLUSIONS

• RECCOMEDATIONS
However for future projects, we recommend;
For roads, through traffic should be discouraged within the neighbourhoods. This
can be done by designing local streets in the priority of pedestrian, cyclists and
vehicle, creating cul de sacs with pedestrian routes, positioning amnenities that
draw traffic such as malls at the edges of the community and so on. This will ensure
safety, comfort and connectivity within the neighborhood.
Amenities such as churches, shops and schools should be positioned so that the
maximum number of people are served with the greatest possible convenience.
This can be through central positioning.
