INTRODUCTION
• The area of study was along and enclosed by Ndawula road, Naalya
road, Kiwatule road and Old Kira road.
OBJECTIVES
• MAIN OBJECTIVES
To assess the road network, settlement patterns, amenities, service delivery and drainage in
the area enclosed by the Ndawula road, Naalya road, Kiwatule road and Old Kira road.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
To assess the road network in terms of structure, connectivity, drainage and road width
To assess the settle patterns in the area.
To assess the service delivery in the area in terms of water, security, waste management
school availability, markets and health services.
To access the amenities in the area. To interact with the community and area leaders to
determine the state of affairs in the area

• CONTENT SCOPE
The fieldwork was limited to the road network in terms of structure, connectivity,
drainage and road width, assessment of the settlement patterns, assessment of
the service delivery in the area in terms of water, security, waste management
school availability, markets and health services, and interaction with the
community and area leaders to determine the state of affairs in the area
• GEOGRAPHICAL SCOPE
The area studied was along and enclosed by Ndawula road, Naalya road,
Kiwatule road, Old Kira Road, and Kigobe Road

SITE FINDINGS
• ROAD NETWORK
The road network consists of a series of major routes and minor routes, the
major routes linking to surrounding towns and the minor routes linking the
interior. The major routes include Naalya road, Kiwatule road, Old Kira Road,
and Kigobe Road.
The minor routes such by Ndawula road, Veronica road and many others
have low traffics volumes consisting mainly of private, cyclist and pedestrian
modes.
ROAD NETWORKS
• NAALYA ROAD
Naalya road is a tarmacked of approximate width 8m running from Ntinda to
Naalya round about, a two lane road (single carriageway) with each lane
for a different direction. Different furniture such as street lights and cameras
are along the road alignment. The road lacks curbs, pedestrian and cyclist
lanes with all traffic sharing the same carriageway with pedestrians moving
along the edge of the road posing a safety concern.

KIWATULE ROAD
The road is also tarmacked with a width of approximately 8m linking old Kiira
road to Naalya road. It’s also a two lane road (single carriageway) with
each lane for a different direction and in a similar state as the Naalya road.
NDAWULA ROAD
Ndawula road is a partly tarmacked (asphalt concrete road) of
approximately 5 meters in width. It is a single lane road. This road is used by
low traffic volumes, cyclists and pedestrians. It is about 0.44 kilometers long
and is located in Kiwatule, Kampala. Its within the residential area

• FOOTPATHS
The position of footpath was not clearly defined rather pedestrians would
just move along the edge of the pavement c risk to road users.

• STREET FURNITURE
Street furniture are items placed within the street with the purpose of
directing movement or enhancing its place value and include public art,
lighting, bollards, guardrails, seating and cycle parking.

DRAINAGE SYSTEMS
Dimensions
The area had trapezoidal open drainage channels whose surfaces are Top: 1.4 m
Bottom: 0.6m
stone pitched. Depth: 0.7 m
These channels accommodate surface run off from storm water especially
from the road surface
Drainage Along Drainage channel along Drainage channel and Student taking

• KERBS
All the roads lacked kerbs except a portion of the Ndawula rode.

SETTLEMENT PATTERNS
• The settlement pattern was mostly linear along major routes and
nucleated in the interior consisting of residential, commercial and mixed
use zones. The commercial and mixed used were mainly located along
the major with the residential in the interior

• RESIDENTS
• Challenges faced by the residents
High costs of living.
Conflict of road usage.
Emphasized need to tarmac roads
Shortage of street lights
14
10/29/2020
• CHALLENGES
the chairmen of ndawula and naalya areas were not available
Covid 19 pandemic made some people fear to talk to us
We also face a problem of language barrier with some of the communities
members as not many could speak english.

CONCLUSION
All in all, the fieldwork was a success despite all the hardship and we able to
relate class work knowledge to what is in the field and consequently gain
more appreciation for urban engineering. In a special way, great
appreciation goes to Mr. Lwamunda Godfrey for the opportunity provided
