There were nine student learning outcomes (SLO’s) in this class, they were: project planning,
project analysis visual communication, content development, written communication, reviewing
and editing, organizational design, content management, and production and delivery. These
SLO’s helped me focus on important aspects of my projects while working on them. In this
memo I will discuss what I have learned from and about these outcomes as well as how they will
help me in the future
The three SLO’s when creating my first project were project planning, project analysis, and
visual communication. However, these SLO’s were included in all my projects, so I will discuss
what I learned about the SLO’s from the class as a whole. As far as project planning goes, I
learned the importance of creating an outline for any sort of project. I used to create outlines, but
they weren't nearly as thorough as the outlines for the projects in this class and it was very
helpful. As for project analysis, I learned a lot because I had never really thought about this
aspect of a project too much, I had always just thought about creating a project for 'my teacher'
and not for an audience that it would be appropriate to. This class helped me realize that you
must be socially responsible while creating a project, to not offend any group of people or
culture, and to specialize your project for the audience. Finally, I learned that visual
communication is sometimes necessary in a project and always helpful. I had always known
visual communication is important for conveying information, because I have always been a
visual learner. In this class particularly, I gained so many skills needed to present information in
a visually appealing way.
The three SLO’s for my second project were content development, written communication, and
reviewing and editing. However, as I said before, I learned about these outcomes in all the
projects I had in this class. What I took away from this class when it comes to content
development is that presenting your information in an orderly and concise manner will give you
the best opportunity for you to achieve your goal. This allows the audience to understand your
content to the full extent and can easily navigate through your document. When I focused on
written communication in this class, I mainly focused on paying attention to a specific audience
because in the past, I focused on the grammar and style aspect of this SLO. I did this by
specifying an audience, addressing topics they should be concerned with and providing useful
information. As for reviewing and editing, I already knew this was important part of creating a
project, and this class was very helpful because multiple people reviewed every project. This is a
big help because getting multiple perspectives will reveal problems and errors that wouldn't have
previously been considered. Especially considering the people reviewing my project understood
all the elements that needed to be included in my project.
The three SLO’s for my third project were organizational design, content management, and
production and delivery. I believe organizational design is a key element in technical
communication because clear and strong research leads to a project that provides understandable
information aimed at a specific goal. This class provided me with an opportunity to really focus
on this aspect and it improved my understanding and use of organizational design through
research and formulating a strong argument from it. I learned a lot about content management in
this class because the projects were different than what I was used to. I had to use specific
stylistic practices to teach, report to, and persuade an audience. This taught me how to change
my writing and design styles to fit the type of project I was working on. The final SLO I had
(and I think the most important) was production and delivery. I think this was the most important
SLO because with the growth of technology, being able to present information in several formats
using technology will become a more and more important skill to possess. Before taking this
class, I had created projects using different modes of communication separately. This class has
taught me how to develop and put together all these skills together. This class also improved my
skills in excel and other presentation/ video creation software.
Overall, this class taught me several skills when it comes to multi modal communication as well
as strengthening my writing skills. I am so glad I took this class, because I believe the future we
are headed to will require the use multi modal documents to convey information. I am majoring
in environmental science, so I will most likely have to create environmental reports, proposals,
and PSA’s. This was a very informative class, and I really liked the design of it, it maximized my
learning potential.
