Sample Letters of Recommendation for
Employment
To Whom it May Concern,

It is with great pleasure that I write this recommendation for John Q. Doe.

Mr. Doe was a student in my class, POLS 4435: Comparative Foreign Policy, during the Spring
semester of 2000.  This course is an advanced course in international affairs, designed to
encourage students to think about foreign policymaking within a variety of countries
systematically, logically, and coherently.

Over the course of the semester, I had ample opportunity to assess Mr. Doe’s intellectual
abilities.  In class, he always had intelligent, thought-provoking comments and presented them in
clear, precise form.  Not only were his observations always analytically sound, but they
contributed greatly to the class discussion in so far as they provoked further reflection upon
topics that needed to be emphasized.  Not only was his class participation superb, but he received
excellent marks on all of his assignments.  His term paper expertly analyzed the institutions of
Russian foreign policymaking in the context of NATO involvement in Kosovo.  He received an
“A” on this paper, an “A” for class participation, and “A’s” on both in-class exams.  Overall, he
ranked in the top 5% of this class.

As you can see, Mr. Doe’s performance in this course was outstanding.   He is an extremely
promising student – highly motivated, persistent, and intelligent.  It has been a joy and a
privilege to have him in my class.

Mr. Doe’s personal qualities match his intellectual qualities.  I have found John to
possess all of the qualities required to excel in virtually any environment – maturity,
seriousness, impeccable respect for fellow students, dedication, and a positive outlook.  Most
importantly, I believe Mr. Doe to be an individual of impeccable integrity – highly suited to a
position of leadership and responsibility in our country.

It is obvious to me that John will make an excellent student of law.  I believe that Mr.
Doe will be a tremendous asset to your institution and to the legal profession in general.

I highly recommend him for just such an endeavor.

                                                                                    Very Respectfully,

John P. Moran, Ph.D.

Director of Career Services

Dear Dr. Jones:

I am delighted to write a letter of recommendation on behalf of Florence Nightingale. I

have known Florence for more than four years. She first came to me as a work study
student to organize our year long career panel series while I was still Assistant Director
at National Standards University (NSU). I would have to say Florence was one of the
most thoughtful, thorough, and independent program planners that we had had at NSU.
She encouraged us to pay special attention to such issues as minority representation as
well as to produce a balanced and interesting set of events.

In 1999, when I took over the position of Director of Career Planning and Placement for
the All American University, I had no professional staff to help me in the rather large
task of offering direct services to 1000 students and several hundred active alumni/ae.
The first student counselor I hired did not work out, and I immediately thought of
Florence. Although she already had a heavy work schedule at NSU in addition to being
a full-student, she accepted the position here to handle a full range of professional
responsibilities, including career counseling, workshop leadership, and materials
design. In these and in all of her endeavors, Florence has demonstrated creativity,
adaptability, and abundant enthusiasm. I must say I would have had great difficulty
“surviving” my first year on this job without Florence’s help and support.

Individual and small-group work with students and alumni enabled Florence to enhance
her counseling skills. Her administrative capabilities have grown, too, as she has sought
new responsibilities and assumed new projects. Her contributions to staff development
and her suggestions relating to programming have been impressive.

As a colleague, Florence is very enjoyable. She establishes rapport easily with all
clients and fellow workers. She has succeeded in creating enthusiasm among all who
work alongside her. Her sense of humor and easy-going personality have been much
appreciated.
Florence has also been involved in the organization, “American School Women” and
has single-handedly kept the organization alive through a series of well-planned
programs. She is currently planning a panel of discussion on “Women in Educational
Leadership.”

Florence Nightingale is an extremely capable professional who is ready to assume

managerial and supervisory responsibilities. She has my strongest recommendation. If
you wish to know more about this competent and energetic individual, do not hesitate to
contact me at (617-495-3427).

Sincerely,

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I would like to introduce myself as JOHN. I have completed my bachelor of Engineering in Electronics &
Communication from SIR M.VISVESVARAYA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY an esteemed institution under
BANGALORE UNIVERSITY.I always had the ambition of pursuing the MS program right from my
childhood days.

I firmly believe that inquisitive and explorative attitude leads to constant learning process. As an
Electronics Engineer, I look for graduate study to refine my knowledge and skills in my areas of interest. I
believe it will also serve to give direction to my goal of a career as research oriented organization.

During my undergraduate study subjects like Communication systems, Signal processing, VLSI, Control
systems, Microprocessors have been my favorite subjects. In particular I like Signal processing & VLSI,
and would like to specialize in that. The electronic chip has always fascinated me. As years roll by the
size of the chip is decreasing and the cost is decreasing effectively. Though the size is decreasing, the
sophistication of the function performed by the chip is increasing all the time. This advancement in the
technology of the chip industry has inspired me to work in that industry, but as for my MS degree, I
would remain open to other topics as well.

My project work during my final year of undergraduate course was on Flash Microcontrollers (ATMEL
AT89C55).The title of the project was “SERIAL COMMUNICATION BETWEEN CONTROL CARDS IN (10+1)
MUX”.10 is the number of Voice/data channels.1 is order wire which is not included in the voice/data
channels and must be written separately. This may appear a deviation from the area in which I wish to
specialize, I am aware of the role that Microcontroller plays in field of Electronics. Hence, with an
aspiration to specialize in area of VLSI or Signal processing, I present my application in front of you
hoping for positive consideration.

I am aware universities in USA offer great scope and encouragement for Intellectual & academic
development. The process of technical advancement is very fast in USA. Hence, USA has emerged as
world leader in Science & Technology. In order to keep myself updated with latest technical advances I
am keen to obtain MS degree in USA.

After consulting my Professors, Friends, seniors studying in USA your university has been recommended
very highly for its excellent faculty & learning experience. I always believe that essence of university
education lies in synergetic relationship between student and his department. I feel that graduate study
at your university will be the most logical extensions of my objectives. I am confident that wholesome
education that I receive at your university will stand me in good stead through out my career.

I sincerely request you to consider my application for admission into your reputed university. I would be
grateful to you if I am accorded the opportunity to pursue my higher studies and given the opportunity, I
am sure that I will be able to able to achieve my goals keeping in touch with the expectations of the
university.

Looking forward to be a part of your graduate program.

Statement of Purpose

Academic & Career Objectives

My long term career goals include the pursuit of research in

The field of Theoretical Computer Science and teaching in an academic environment. I have found that a
career in research is both intellectually stimulating and satisfying and hence I have decided to take this
up as my career objective.

Degree Objectives

I want to work towards a Ph.D. in Computer Science in the field of Theoretical Computer Science. My
interests include both the design and analysis of Algorithms as well as Computational Complexity
Theory.

Reason for Graduate Work

I have always been fascinated by mathematics. As a part of my undergraduate curriculum, I have been
exposed to a range of advanced mathematical techniques and I have been especially drawn towards
both the analysis of Algorithms and Complexity Theory. These fields have both a strong mathematical
flavor as well as the potential for research which is what attracts me towards them.

The fact that these subjects form a unifying feature of all fields in Computer Science and their quest
towards achieving the limits of what can and can't be done, form part of the reasons for my fascination
in them.

An undergraduate degree is merely an exposure to the various fields in any branch of higher education. I
feel that my undergraduate curriculum has given me a sufficient enough exposure to all the various
possibilities for research that are possible and I have chosen the one for which I have both an aptitude
as well as a liking.

In order to pursue an active career in research, it is necessary to both study and understand the finer
nuances of any subject. I believe that Graduate Studies will not only provide me with advanced
knowledge about the field but also prepare me to be a good researcher. It is precisely this reason which
prompts me to take up Graduate Studies as the next step towards my career objectives.

As an initial step towards achieving my goal, as part of my undergraduate studies, I have chosen my
electives so as to enhance my understanding of these subjects. These include such subjects as Design &
Analysis of Algorithms, Combinatorics and Abstract Algebra. I have also audited (taken as non-credit) a
Graduate level course Algorithms & Complexity.

I have attended an Advanced Mathematics Training Program in

Summer'93 to enhance my mathematical abilities.
Why have I chosen Stanford?

I have chosen Stanford as the place at which I would like to pursue a doctoral degree because I find that
the graduate program is fully suited to my needs and that it possesses a strong faculty in the field of
Theoretical Computer Science.

I have also consulted the professors in my university who are working in the field of Algorithms and
Complexity Theory and they have strongly recommended the research work in these fields at Stanford.

Hence, I have applied to Stanford so as to fulfill both my academic as well as my career objectives.

under graduation in Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) with Botany, Zoology and Chemistry as optional subjects
from Osmania University, Delhi and Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA) from
Bureau of Data Processing Systems, Delhi.

My Goal:

My goal is intellectual enrichment and put to good use my knowledge to help those in need. The
experiences in my life have made me to appreciate the value of this goal, and I am bound to get the
impetus to strive ceaselessly to attain my cherished goals in the new millennium. I am convinced that my
study at your esteemed institute which has a long term record of academic excellence, backed by expert
faculty and very good research facilities would be a meaningful and rewarding experience. I earnestly
look forward to being a part of your academic community.

Work Experience:

My career commenced as a Computer Faculty in SOFTLAB (P) LTD. Later I joined the prestigious
“International Crops Research institute for Semi-Arid Tropics” (ICRISAT) and continuing as an Executive
(IT-Helpdesk) in the Information Systems Unit (ISU).

My major job responsibilities are:

1. Helpdesk team member – troubleshooting and maintaining a network of more than 600 PCs across

My future aspirations:

Apart from having a strong work experience, wish to promote the goal of pursuing higher education and
engage in research with special emphasis in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) with the
following topics:

1. Promoting Entrepreneurship in Rural youth and women with the help of ICT using E-Commerce.

Knowledge and information is essential for people to respond successfully to the opportunities and
challenges of social, economic and technological changes, including those that help to improve
agricultural productivity, food security and rural livelihoods. Today, there is a rapid increase in use of
information and communication technologies in all fields especially in dissemination of information to
the rural audience. But there are no blueprint approaches for ICTs or magic bullet ICTs that will
automatically improve rural livelihoods. Developing countries each have location-specific agricultural
and rural development constraints and opportunities, and country-specific technological constraints and
opportunities. Always the question arises on how these technologies are transforming the rural
communities with the use of ICT, which is another mode of communication within the rural areas.

2. Entrepreneurship development and empowerment of rural women through Self-Help Groups and
NGOs.

The task of developing entrepreneurship and empowering rural women is challenging and needs in-
depth research on how to portray a profile of rural women entrepreneurs and their enterprises in the
small scale sector; to explore gender differences in entrepreneurial characteristics; to identify problems
unique to rural women in setting up and running their enterprises.

3. Role of ICT in developing leadership qualities in rural entrepreneurs.

Leadership development training programmes on a continuous basis can be effectively organized for
effective use of communication technologies. This will embody a culture of empowerment where
farmwomen and rural youth learn the life skills of decision-making, leadership, service and self-
governance. These engaged and empowered farmwomen and rural youth can transform the world.

Projects and Research work:

Getting the right kind of exposure to an ambience of ICT to dilate my cognizance pragmatically is one of
my primary concerns. Since 4 years, I am involved in Development work in Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) in connecting villages and knowledge sharing with Government and
non-governmental organizations (NGOs) under the eminent leadership of Dr. V. Balaji, (who is an
exponent in the ICT development field).
Publications:
 “Impact of Information and Communication Technology on Human Mind” 2005, published in the
Indian Journal for Social Development, Vol. 5, No. 2,
 “Gender Equity, Empowerment and Diversity” 2006, Indian Journal for Development Research and
Social Action, Vol. 1; No: 2.
Career Goals:
My rationale to seek a graduate degree in U.S. was a result of my search for a broader, interactive and
challenging education with flexibility to choose the versatility of your own programme. As I perceive it,
U.S. is the confluence of intellectuals from the various parts of the globe. A society of competitive and
enterprising individuals with cosmopolitan outlook attracts students from all over the world. You get to
study with international students and learn about different cultures and societies.

Why your university?

I am confident that I possess the required preparation, motivation, intellectual ability and commitment
to do justice to a graduate program. I am convinced that my study at your esteemed university be a
meaningful and rewarding experience. By graduating from an esteemed program like yours, I wish to
gain in-depth practical knowledge of the subjects I have long adored, which I believe would help me to
contribute to the technological advancements by learning and working alongside with some of the
eminent faculty in the area. I believe this experience to be the cornerstone of my technological career
ahead of me. But at the same time, with my strong background and ardor in pursuit of knowledge, I am
confident I will be able to contribute to research work at your university and live up to the expectations
of your academic standards. I earnestly look forward to being a part of your academic community.

Thank you

Sample SOP - 2 for PhD Physics

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

In this statement of my objective, I have highlighted my reasons for pursuing a graduate Programme at
University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. Bearing in mind my academic background, capabilities and interests,
I have decided to pursue graduate studies in Physics with my focus on CONDENSED MATTER &
THEORITICAL PHYSICS. In what follows, I have briefly summed up my motivation for graduate study, my
background and my research interests.

Right from the onset of my academic years, fascination for the science of mathematics and physics has
prompted me to do a major in Physics. I started my education at the Gujarati High School, Secunderabad
where I stood SECOND among nearly 100 students in the final Secondary School Exam (SSC) 10th exam.
The excellent schooling I had received during the formative years of my life stimulated my ebullience in
the field of science and mathematics, its influence combined with incessant encouragement from my
family and teachers motivated me to choose a carrier in Physics.

After completing my Intermediate (plus 2) in Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry, I Joined Bharatiya Vidya
Bhavan’s Vivekananda Degree College ,Secunderabad to pursue a BACHELORS degree in three subjects
MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS, and COMPUTER SCIENCE . Bhavan’s holds the credit of being an institute of
excellent repute affiliated to OSMANIA UNIVERSITY which is a long standing university since
independence of India. The intensive undergraduate education at Bhavan’s has provided me with a firm
foundation on the basics .The college, which has been accredited as a GRADE 'A’ college by the National
Board of Accreditation (NAAC), offered me a plethora of core courses in all the three subjects .The
courses in Mathematics like Vector Calculus, Differential Equations, Group Theory Fields & Numerical
Analysis have helped me understand physics both at UG level & at Post graduate level thoroughly.

Throughout my undergraduate study I was guided by the Head of the Department of Mathematics Dr.
K.Vasudev Rao who has 20 years of experience as a faculty of Mathematics & Mrs.Priya, Lecturer in
Physics, who inspired me to be among the top 1 % of 60 students. Taking vivid courses like Mechanics,
Waves & Oscillations, Optics , Thermodynamics, Electricity & Magnetism , and Modern Physics could
satiate my thirst only to some extent.

This eventually led me to take a statewide entrance test for Post graduate in physics in which I was
placed among the top 1% of the 25,000 candidates (where the rejection rate is over 90%). This
achievement paved my way to pursue further studies in Physics in an institute of excellent repute,
University College of Science , Osmania University. UCS has been accredited with FIVE STARS which
confirms it to be an institute of academic excellence by National Board of Accreditation (NAAC).

The Department of physics, its state of art facilities, infrastructure & most importantly its distinguished
& eminent Faculty members helped me to strengthen my knowledge in the subject. In my 2 years of
Postgraduate studies I have completed various courses like Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics ,
Electronics, Nuclear Physics, Mathematical Physics, Physics Of Atoms & Molecules, Electro Magnetic
Theory & Modern Optics. Throughout my post graduate study I received constant help from the Board
of Studies Chairman Dr.M.Laksmipati Rao, who having over 30 years of experience as a Professor in UCS,
inspired me to be among the top 2% in a class of 100 students.

My immense interest in Condensed Matter Physics and in Theoretical Physics subjects is the main reason
for choosing them as my probable graduate course of study. My interest in the field of Condensed
Matter Physics(my specialization in Post graduate degree) led to tutor myself in the fundamentals of
Solid State Physics, Crystal Physics & Its Physical Properties, Phonon Physics, Electrical Transport
Phenomenon In Solids, Optical & Resonance Phenomenon In Solids, Nano Materials.

The information I have gathered in my 2yr post graduate course and from relevant journals have
convinced me that I can mould my enthusiasm and vigor towards my advancement in this field. I have
keenly followed the development of Piezo & Ferro Electrical Substances , Molecular Spectroscopy,
Optical Transitions , Phase Transitions & Quantum Dots through the Internet and various journals at our
college library. I hope to contribute my part in a meaningful way to this ever changing world of solid
state physics.

To top this, I got an opportunity to work as an Under Graduate faculty in Bhavan’s Vivekananda Degree
College, for a period of 3 months during which I learned the finer aspects of physics and taught the same
to my students.

The journey ahead promises to be a challenging one, both arduous and demanding at times, but then
the thrill one gets when one discovers something new at the frontiers of human knowledge, however
small the contribution maybe, is unparalleled.

Hence, I request that my candidature be considered for admission with substantial financial aid. I
strongly feel that I can match the high standards of your university and contribute fruitfully to research
endeavors at your university. I earnestly look forward to join the elite club of researchers and shape my
career in the halls of University of Arkansas.

Thanking you for giving me an opportunity to express myself.

Sample SOP - 1 for MBA

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I will never hide my talents, if I am silent, I am forgotten. If I do not advance, I will fall back. If I walk
away from my challenge today, my self-esteem will forever be scarred, and if I cease to grow even a
little, I will become smaller. I reject the stationary position because it is always the beginning of the end.
This philosophy has played an important role in shaping my objectives and framing my plans for the
future.

I think one of my most distinguishing characteristics is the diversity of experience I possess. I am a

science student with a flair for the commerce. I am a man with technical aptitude and an interest in
management. I also have passion for traveling and understanding different cultures of the world. All
these elements have given me very broad outlook, with varying degrees of knowledge in a range of
topics. I strongly believe that although some are not related directly, all these qualities will influence my
graduate work.

Born in a family where business has been the source of living, business has been my passion right from
childhood. How things work and what keeps world going on has always fascinated me. Business is all
about persistent implementation of what a person perceives from the surroundings and is perhaps the
most efficient and fruitful path for a person with penchant to enhance his life’s standard as well as his
surroundings. Right from schools days I was much influenced by the idea of Business & Management.
This fascination for Business and Management and keen interest in ever-growing world of Business
motivated me to take up the Business Administration (BBA) subject at the Under-Graduate level.

I have been dedicated towards my studies right from childhood. I completed my school and my pre-
university education, Physics and Mathematics being my majors with flying colors in the Intermediate
Examination (10+2 pattern) XII, 2001 from a reputed college in Hyderabad. Then I shifted to Rajkot
(GUJARAT) where I opted for Bachelor of Business Administration and joined a distant cousin’s business
as a part time associate. I got the opportunity to pursue my goal by getting into an esteemed institute
“T.N.Rao College of I.T & Management Studies”, which is affiliated to Saurashtra University.

I was the topper in the college all through my under-graduate program and I learnt various
fundamentals of Computerized Accounting. In addition, the family business I was taking care of gave me
the required practical knowledge needed. A few months after my arrival, our business in Rajkot elevated
to online scenario.

During this period I had an opportunity to look after the firms’ accounts which had a widespread effect
on me and developed interest in the field of Finance. Finance is considered as the back bone of any
business. Business purely depends upon the financial strategies adopted by a company.

Excellence in any sphere of life can be achieved only through determination, hard work, perseverance
and dedication. Yet lack of in-depth knowledge of subject leaves the conceptual skills incomplete. It is in
this context that I would like to pursue a course that not only supplements the knowledge but also
provides a strong foundation to my study.

I am keenly interested in pursuing my graduate program in the field of BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION,

mainly because of the vast curriculum of the subject which I believe would help in honing the skills and
expertise desired from a businessman of the modern world, and also because it happens to be highly
recognized all around the world. I have always tried to keep myself updated in the new areas of Business
and this has helped me develop a confident and solid foundation of underlying principles and concepts
to build on for graduate work in my areas of interest.

I know the intricacies related to the business world as I am a part of a company which in every sense is a
true embodiment of Business values and which is renowned for its administrative and managerial
expertise. I have been working with THOMAS COOK INDIA LIMITED in FOREIGN EXCHANGE
DEPARTMENT. I am responsible for all the Transactions related to S.W.I.F.T (Society for Worldwide
Interbank Financial Telecommunication). My role is to answer the queries of the customer and to help
him to process the transactions related to purchase and sale of Foreign Exchange.

I sternly believe that a Masters degree from your Graduate School will provide me with the sound
foundation necessary to undertake the courses and subsequently contribute to my field of interest. I
presume that the undergraduate education had equipped me adequately to carry out innovative and
original Business Lessons, and a MASTERS degree from a deemed university as yours with the able
guidance of experienced faculty will impart more knowledge and help me in my future endeavors.
Hence I realize the need for me to study at the centre stage of activity in this field in your esteemed
university. My earnest desire to continue my further studies at your graduate school stems from the fact
that it is one of the top universities in your country. Given an opportunity to pursue graduate study at
this university, I am confident I will be able to do justice to your faith in me.
Thanking you,

If you are working in an organization, then why should you opt for Graduate School?

There are various reasons, why people tend to go for the graduate schools. But it is wise for the
applicant to graduate school to think about his goals and what he plans to gain by graduation
because graduation does not come cheap and the person may have to spend time and money to
achieve this goal.

The reasons, that forces a employee to graduate schools includes:

1. An individual may want to increase his knowledge by attending graduate school.

2. May want to enhance his knowledge on the specific field, where he is already proficient.
3. The person may want to satisfy his personal ambition of higher studies
4. Career promotion also compels higher studies because promotions come easy with superior
degrees.
5. Can avail greater opportunities with superior degrees
6. Better financial prospect, due to enhanced career growth opportunities.
7. Achieving further proficiency in existing specialized field.
8. Continuing education for advanced degrees

On few occasions, even the employer suggest or sponsor employee for continuing higher studies
or graduation school, if he thinks, greater knowledge will highly enhance the productivity of the
employee. The human resource department or the employer also recommends higher studies to
increases their pool of more specialized and knowledgeable employees.
But it is not easy to get into reputed graduate schools for quality education. The employee may
be very intelligent, sincere and dedicated to his duties but these qualities are not enough for him
to get admission into any good graduation school. Many schools mainly rely on standard
recommendations to take in the students. Many technical schools look forward for
recommendation of the Technological Organizations for their employees to get admission in the
graduation school.
Below given Employer Recommendation for Graduation School Sample Letter is written by the
director of an Architect Designing company, recommending one of his employees for further
continuing education in graduation school:
