Abstract

In the Philippines, the primary source of energy is still fossil fuels, particularly coal,
being said to be the cheapest among the energy technology available. But with the falling
prices of solar – the most accessible form of renewable energy – on a global scale, the
current Philippine energy situation will change soon and eventually transition to energy
sources with lesser to no carbon footprint.

Solar is becoming a more attractive energy option today due to its decreasing
systems cost, increasing efficiency, and expanding applications. In residential, commercial,
industrial, and utility scales, and in both rooftop and ground installations, solar provides
significant energy savings which translates to lower electricity bills. The return of investment
is as quick as 4 years with solar panels harvesting energy up to 25 years or even more.

A basic solar setup is composed of solar panels, inverter, mounting structure, and
electrical components. This is called the grid-tied system, designed for savings during
daytime as it uses the solar harvest in real time. A mechanism called net metering can be
applied for any solar excess which allows for bill credits. If the solar setup comes with energy
storage, or batteries, it is called the off-grid system. It is intended for energy backup, used
especially during nighttime or brownouts, recommended for areas with unreliable power
supply. Hybrid systems combining both the features of grid-tied and off-grid are also
possible.

The sun is a massive source of energy. It is only a matter of converting this energy
into power using quality photovoltaic solar panels. This is where the technology developed in
the research lab of Panasonic Solar comes in.
