Summative Evaluation of Practicum

Master of Teaching

Teacher Candidate: Carmen Szeto
Year: 2  Practicum Session: 1
Dates: November 2, 2020 to November 27, 2020

Associate Teacher: Rob Mound
Grade level and/or subjects: Science General, Biology
School: Monarch Park C.I.
Board: TDSB

PROFESSIONALISM
Ms Szeto demonstrated professionalism and dedication throughout the teaching profession. She works well
with others and communicates openly and respectfully with students, staff and administration. She was open to
new ideas and flexible enough to function effectively in various teaching modes. She demonstrated reflective
practice on her performance and made adjustments to improve instruction, accepting and integrating feedback,
including critical feedback into lesson plans. She is also willing to give feedback, including critical feedback.
She demonstrates strong planning and communication well in advance of lessons.

DIVERSITY AND EQUITY
Ms Szeto created an atmosphere of mutual respect in the classroom. She was friendly, competent and showed
a genuine interest in the students and effectively developed rapport with students. She increasingly made
accommodations to her plans, lesson delivery and assessment to ensure that all learners could be successful in
the classroom. She used non-gendered language and spent extra time to accommodate English Language
Learners and students with Individual Education Plans.

INVOLVEMENT IN SCHOOL / COMMUNITY LIFE
Ms Szeto developed positive relationships with staff and students. There is an outdoor break and Ms Szeto
took that opportunity to meet other teachers and administrators. We are in a lock down right now and all extra
curricular activities are cancelled. Students and teachers have to leave the building immediately after classes
end in order to arrive home for online learning. Staff meetings and department meetings are cancelled,
Professional Learning Communities are cancelled. While Parent Teacher Interviews took place, their placement
relative to the practice block excluded that as a meaningful opportunity. Ms Szeto clearly has the temperament
of someone who would engage fully with school/community life, if more of that was going on.

UNDERSTANDING CURRICULUM AND THE LEARNER
Knowledge of subject content was demonstrated with excellence. Lessons were planned in relation to
curriculum documents and Ms Szeto took the time to refresh her knowledge so she could demonstrate
concepts with confidence. She incorporated creativity, multimedia technology, and interactive role play activities
with physical distancing into lessons. She engaged in effective questioning to bring out student knowledge and
promoted discussion and engagement while doing so. By varying her teaching strategies and chunking lessons
she maintained student engagement through 3.75 hour in-person classes and during 1.25 hour online classes.
She used padlet and jamboards to increase student engagement online and provided structured and scaffolded
activities to support in class activities.

ASSESSMENT, PLANNING AND INSTRUCTION
During her lessons, Ms Szeto focussed on key themes and made sure each student understood the concepts
and connections between them before moving to link additional material. She gave clear instructions including
providing rubrics, checklists and written or electronic instructions in advance. She made multiple efforts to
ensure students could demonstrate knowledge providing clear expectations, flexible deadlines and ultimate

deadlines. She varied assessment strategies, using tests and projects and she gave verbal and written
feedback on all assessments, whether formative or summative. She returned work in a timely manner.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
Ms Szeto was able to utilize existing classroom routines and was able to develop others as required. For
example pre-existing rules related to food, drink, masks, breaks, contact logs, washroom logs, sanitation, hats
during the land acknowledgement and national anthem. She recognized the importance of consistent,
reasonable redirections around phone use, talking over others and mask compliance. The class was well
planned with a clear agenda. Her classes were engaging and well organized with smooth transitions such that
potential management issues were avoided.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
As the placement progressed, Ms Szeto had opportunity to repeat lessons, reflect on improvements and then
implement new ideas. Despite teaching the same class twice in a row, her lessons evolved and improved. This
reflective approach will ensure future success and I am confident that Ms Szeto will be a fantastic addition to
any school lucky enough to hire her. I would certainly be happy to work with her as a colleague in the future or
have my own child in her class. If i can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely
Rob Mound
