Dimensions and Units: Sheet

This document contains 15 physics problems related to dimensions, units, temperatures, pressures, densities, and weights in different contexts and locations. The problems involve converting between different units of measurement, calculating densities, pressures, and weights on other planets and at different elevations based on given acceleration due to gravity or other physical properties. The last problem asks the reader to determine the pressure exerted on a submarine cruising at a depth of 300 feet below the sea surface.

Dimensions and Units

1. Find the weight of a body having a mass of 10 Ibm, located at the surface of
mars where the acceleration due to gravity is 39% of that on Earth.
2. A cubical block of a material having a volume of 1 m3 weights 2000 N at the
earth’s surface. What is its density?

3. The mass of the earth is approximately equal to 61024 kg. What is the
average density of the earth, assuming the earth to be a sphere of radius
6.4106m?

4. What will an astronaut’s weight be on the moon if his weight on the earth is
185 Ibf? The acceleration due to the moon’s gravity 1/6 that of the earth’s.
What will his mass be on the moon?
5. A rigid container having a volume of 3.5 ft3 holds 10 Ibm of a gas. Find the
specific volume of the gas. If 5 Ibm of the gas are discharged from the
container, what will be the specific volume of the gas remaining in the
container?

6. The air temperature on a nice summer day is 80F. What is this temperature
in C? What is the absolute temperature in R and in K?

7. The reading of a thermometer using the Fahrenheit scale is the same as the
reading on a Celsius scale thermometer. What is the temperature?
9. Convert the following:
-ㅊ 42 foot of water to pounds force per square inch.
-ㅋ 150 Joules to foot- pounds force.
-ㅌ 110 foot -pounds force to Joules.
-ㅍ 200 foot -pounds force to meter kilogram's force.

10. The vacuum gauge on the condenser reads 0.66 in.Hg what is the absolute
pressure in the condenser in bar.
11. A pressure gauge installed in a high pressure boiler reads 18.5 kgf/cm2 gauge
and the barometer reads 756 mm.Hg what will be the absolute pressure in the
boiler in kgf/cm2 and kPa?
12. A vertical cylinder containing Argon gas is fitted with a piston of 40 kg mass
and cross-sectional area of 0.25 m2. The atmospheric pressure outside the
cylinder is 95 kPa and the local gravitational acceleration is 9.79 m/s 2. What is
the Argon pressure inside the cylinder?
13. The value of the gravitational acceleration g decreases with elevation from
9.807 m/s2 at sea level to 9.767 m/s2 at an altitude of 13 km, where large
passenger planes cruise. Determine the percent reduction in the weight of an air
plane cruising at 13 km relative to its weight at sea level.
14. If the barometric readings at the top and the bottom of a building are 730 and
755 mm Hg respectively determine the height of the building. Assume an
average air density of 1.18 kg/m3.
15. Determine the pressure exerted on the surface of a submarine cruising 300 ft
blow the free surface of the sea. Assume that the barometric pressure is 14.7 psi
and the specific gravity of sea water is 1.03
