First Order Differential Equation: Homogenous Equations TEST 1: 19/10 6-7 PM Presentation Chapter 1 - 30/9/2015

1. The document discusses homogeneous differential equations. It provides examples of determining if a differential equation is homogeneous and solving homogeneous equations using separation of variables. 2. It also discusses solving a specific homogeneous differential equation using substitutions to put it in separable form: dy/dx = xy/(x^2 + y^2). 3. The document provides steps for solving homogeneous differential equations: determining if the equation is homogeneous, making substitutions, separating variables, integrating, and solving for constants.

2. Homogenous Differential Equations
𝑑𝑦
A differential equation = 𝑓 𝑥, 𝑦 is homogenous if 𝑓 𝜆𝑥, 𝜆𝑦 = 𝑓 𝑥, 𝑦 . For any value of 𝜆
𝑑𝑥

𝑑𝑦 𝑦−𝑥
Example: =
𝑑𝑥 𝑦+𝑥

𝑑𝑦 𝜆𝑦 − 𝜆𝑥

𝑑𝑥 𝜆𝑦 + 𝜆𝑥

𝑑𝑦 𝜆(𝑦 − 𝑥)

1. Determine whether the function given is homogeneous function or
not.
𝑑𝑦 𝑑𝑣
2. Substitute 𝑦 = 𝑥𝑣 and = 𝑥 + 𝑣.
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥
3. The differential equation must be in the form of separable
variables. Solve it using the method of separation of variables.
