PEER GROUP

PEER- a person who is the same age or has the same social position or the
same abilities as other people in a group.

Advantages of peer group

1. Social Development
By interacting with children their own age, kids learn how to work cooperatively,
collaborate with people and relate to others. Peer interactions also foster
communication skills, which is necessary for social development.
2. Cognitive Development
When children learn cooperatively through partner or group activities, they share
interests, ideas and perspectives. Children who interact with each other through different
learning and recreational activities are also encouraged to develop creative, problem-
solving and conflict-resolution skills.
3. Emotional Development
Interactions with peers give children opportunities to bond and experience different
emotions, such as acceptance and joy. Peer camaraderie and companionship promote
self-esteem and coping skills, which are vital to healthy, overall development as kids grow
up.
4. Physical Development
Friends and peers can have a strong impact on children’s physical development. When
young children gather outside to play, the physical activities they engage in promote
healthy, fit and strong bodies. Active games of tag, hopscotch, catch, hide-and-go-seek
and even unstructured play on playground equipment encourage development of gross
motor skills, agility and reflex.
5. Teach gender roles
Peer groups can also serve as a venue for teaching members gender roles. Through
gender-role socialization, group members learn about sex differences, and social and
cultural expectations. Peer groups can have great influence or peer pressure on each
other’s gender role behavior, depending on the amount of pressure.
6. Serve as a practicing venue to adulthood
Adolescent peer groups provide support as teens assimilate into adulthood. Major
changes include: decreasing dependence on parents, increasing feelings of self-
sufficiency, and connecting with a much larger social network
7. Identity formation
Peer groups (friends group) can help individuals form their own identity. Identity
formation is a developmental process where a person acquires a sense of self. One of
the major factors that influence the formation of a person’s identity is his or her peers.
8. Peer Pressure
Peer-pressure is a rite of passage that all of us go through but its impact varies
from person to person. In a nutshell, peer-pressure is the influence that friends,
people and individuals are capable of exerting on person.
Disadvantages of peer group

1. Peer pressure.

The term peer pressure is often used to describe instances where an individual feels
indirectly pressured into changing his/her behavior to match that of his/her peers. Taking
up smoking and underage drinking are two of the best known examples.

 A dip in self-confidence – Low self-esteem and a lack of confidence in turn

might impact a child’s general well-being.
 Academics are affected - Sometimes their academics are affected because in
an effort to fit in with their peer group, they place more emphasis on being social
rather than working on their academics.
 Can easily adopt dangerous habits – The more extreme forms of peer pressure
propagate bad habits such as alcohol consumption, smoking, drug abuse.
 Makes them feel ashamed or bad about themselves and their family – At
the average school, the student body is composed of students who come from
various economic backgrounds
 May engage in self harm and suicide ideation – Sometimes the impact of
peer pressure on teenagers is so bad that they can hardly stand to be in their own
skin, are distanced from family and friends and become depressed and anxious.
In such instances, teenagers could attempt self-harm or even dream of
committing suicide, engage in suicidal thoughts and even ultimately engage in
suicide.

2. Sexual promiscuity
Adolescence is also characterized by physical changes, new emotions, and sexual urges,
and teenagers are likely to participate in sexual activity.
