Shaft Alignment Calculations

The document discusses shaft alignment tolerances at speeds above 20,000 RPM by extrapolating values from a figure in a reference book. It shows the extrapolated maximum misalignment values for speeds up to 50,000 RPM and calculates that at 40,000 RPM the maximum misalignment is 0.09272294653 mils/inch for excellent condition. It then calculates the maximum deviation of all four alignment points would be 1.39 μm.

Shaft Alignment Calculations –

With reference to the author of the book “Shaft Alignment Handbook”, John Piotrowski, the
following comments were made:

The current tolerance guides only go to 20,000 rpm, we can extrapolate to 40K.

So, based on the Figure 1 Recommended maximum misalignment of flexibly connected rotating
machinery, from the book “Shaft Alignment Handbook”, John Piotrowski, the allowable alignment
values for speeds >20000 RPM are extrapolated.

Misalignment Value-

From the above tables we have,

At 40000 RPM the maximum misalignment deviation for the excellent condition is,

40000 RPM = 0.09272294653 mils/inch

Now calculating the maximum deviation of all four points, in mils,

Maximum misalignment deviation = maximum deviation of all four points/distance between the flex
points (ref formula from Shaft Alignment Handbook)

distance between the flex points is taken from the given CAD model which is calculated as,

A^-2 - 2C = 69-2*27 = 15mm = 0.590551 inch

0.09272294653 mils/inch = maximum deviation of all four points/0.590551 inch

maximum deviation of all four points, mils = 0.054757628 mils, 0.0013908437512mm, 1.39 µm
