Communication System in Power Sector

Communication systems play an important role in managing power sectors by enabling the exchange of information. SCADA systems use communication technologies to provide real-time transmission of data from sensors and field devices to control centers. Teleprotection systems use communication channels to transmit trip signals between relays to quickly isolate faults. Automatic meter reading systems automate the collection of customer meter data using digital communication techniques to provide benefits like remote disconnections, accurate load information, and voltage monitoring.

Managing Complex Grid

•Indian Grid is a Geographically Vast and Physically
Complex network of transmission highways and switching
terminus.
•It carries large power from generating centers to the load
centers.
•To mange such large and complex grid, one requires:-
• Seconds to second information on the state of the grid – Information
Technology..
• Reliable and speedy delivery of these information – Communication
technology.
•Information requirements are met by innovative sensors and
devices provided by modern electronics.
•Communications requirements are met by modern
technologies like microwave, fiber optic etc.

TELEPROTECTIN

 TELEPROTECTIN SCHEME IS NOT ONLY USEFUL

FOR PRTECTION OF LINES,IT IS ALSO USEFUL
FOR AUTOMATIC LOAD SHEDDING FOR
PRTECTIONOF GRIDS IN CASE OF
DISTURBANCE IN MAJOR INTRA STATE LINES
AMR DEFINITION

 AMR
 Automatic Remote Meter Reading .
 Automating the process of measurement through digital
communication techniques.
CRITICAL BENEFITS FROM AMRS

◼ Ability to detect tamper events and outage occurrences.

◼ Remotely Connect/ Disconnect power supply through meter.
◼ Calculate transformer,LINES loading and sizing from interval data
◼ 15 minute interval data gives accurate load information for supply
scheduling, switching operations, planning etc
◼ Monitor voltage at each premise to know conditions when to operate
capacitor switches or regulators
◼ Consistent and granular data for improved accuracy
HOW AMR WORKS ?

 Remotely reads customer meters and then transfers the

data into the billing system
• Reduce the need for meter readers to manually gather
utility meter readings each month.

 Meter Interface Module

 PLCC IS DUPLEX TYPE OF COMMUNICATION
 BASED ON SINGLE SIDE BAND MODULATION
PLCC
 THE CHANNEL FREQUENCY WILL BE EITHER IN 4 KHZ
BANDWIDTH OR 8 KHZ BANDWIDTH DEPENDING ON
THE SINGLE CHANNEL OR TWIN CHANNEL EQPT.
 PLCC CONVERTS A INPUT SIGNAL OF 0-4 KHZ
BANDWIDTH TO THE RF RANGE BETWEEN 50-500
KHZ AND AMPLIFIES THIS RFSIGNALTO THE DESIRED
OUTPUT LEVEL (UPTO 40 WATTS).

 A PILOT FREQUENCY (EX.3630 HZ) IS USED

FOR TRANSMISSION OF DIAL PULSES AND
ALSO FOR SELF MONITORING AND AUTOMATIC

PLCC--- CONS

 Limited bandwidth(4 KHz)

 Data speeds up to only 1200 Bauds possible
 Prone to Noise & Interference
 Effect of weather conditions-frost, high pollution
etc
 Depends on physical connectivity of power lines
 Needs government approval for carrier freq
selection
 Not suitable for today’s needs of automation
like SAS, remote control etc.

51
DIGITAL PLCC
Utilizes 8 KHz to establish a full DUPLEX connection

Data stream including voice ,data & teleprotection

@ 32 Kbits/sec can be transmitted

Can accommodate 3 Speech channels and 9 Data channels

Relevent Standard IEC- 495

Utilizes the same band width as an analog PLC.

Increase the capacity ( at least 3 times) that of analog PLC

WHY FIBER ?
• Need for Fiber Optics technology is constantly increasing
– Driven by increasing data rates
– Declining implementation cost
• Many advantages
– SPEED: Fiber optic networks operate at high speeds
- up to the Terabits per seconds
– BANDWIDTH: large carrying capacity
– RESISTANCE: Greater resistance to electromagnetic
noise such as radios, motors or other nearby cables.
– MAINTENANCE: Fiber optic cables costs much less
to maintain
– Low signal attenuation
– Highly Secured
APPLICATIONS OF OPTICAL FIBER

1. LONG DISTANCE COMMUNICATION BACKBONES

2. INTER-EXCHANGE JUNCTIONS
3. VIDEO TRANSMISSION
4. BROADBAND SERVICES
5. COMPUTER DATA COMMUNICATION (LAN, WAN etc..)
6. HIGH EMI AREAS
7. NON-COMMUNICATION APPLICATIONS (sensors
etc…)

The light stays confined to the core because the
cladding has a lower refractive index—a measure of
its ability to bend light.

Technology Options – Optical Fibers
An Optical Fiber is a flexible thin filament of glass. Optical Communication system accepts
electrical signals as inputs, convert them into optical signals, carry them over fiber optic
cables and revert them into electrical signals at the destination. There are various types
of OFCs Underground, Aerial, OPGW etc.

FIBER OPTIC COMMUNICATION
Fiber optic cable functions as a "light guide," guiding the light introduced at one end of the cable
through to the other end. The light source can either be a light-emitting diode (LED) or a laser. Using
a lens, the light pulses are funneled into the fiber-optic medium where they travel down the cable.

 The light (near infrared) is most often are used :

 850nm for shorter distances
 1300nm for longer distances on Multi-mode fiber
 1310-1320nm for single-mode fiber
 1,500nm is used for longer distances.
