EIM 319 Assignment 1 2019

A committee of doctors proposes a nutrition scheme for babies with two types of foods available in standard packets. The costs and vitamin contents of each food type must satisfy minimum vitamin requirements at lowest cost. Powerco has 3 plants supplying electricity to 4 cities. An LP model must minimize the cost of meeting each city's demand by determining the optimal distribution of power from each plant to each city based on shipping costs. An IME department head has 4 subordinates and 4 tasks to assign to minimize total man-hours based on an effectiveness matrix of estimated times for each subordinate on each task.

Assignment 1

Question 1
A nutrition scheme for babies is proposed by a committee of doctors. Babies can be given
two types of food (Type I and Type II), which are available in standard packets weighing 50
grams. The cost per packet of these foods is Rs. 2.00 and Rs. 3.00 respectively. The vitamin
availability in each type of food per packet and the minimum vitamin requirement in each
type of vitamin is summarized in Table 16.2. Develop a linear programming model to
determine the optimal combination of food types with the minimum cost such that the
minimum required vitamin in each type is satisfied.

Question 2
Powerco has 3 electric power plants that supply the needs of 4 cities. Each power plant can
supply the following numbers of kilowatt-hours (kwh) of electricity: plant 1 –35 million;
plant 2 –50 million; plant 3 –40 million (see Table 1). The peak power demands in these
cities, which occur at the same time (2pm), are as follows (in kwh): city 1 –35 million; city 2 –
20 million; city 3 –30 million; city 4 -30 million. The costs of sending 1 million kwh of
electricity from plant to city depend on the distance the electricity must travel. Formulate
an LP to minimize the cost of meeting each city’s peak power demand.

Question 3
The IME department head has 4 subodinates and 4 tasks to be performed. The subordinates
differ in efficiency and the tasks differ in their intrinsic difficulty. His estimate of the times
each man would take to perform each taks is given in the EFFECTIVENESS MATRIX Table Q3.
Allocate or assign the tasks to each subordinate such that total man-hours are minimised.
