Our history shaped our society, culture and identity. In order to understand our current
outlook we need to look back on what happened to our ancestors.
History helps us know who we are, or in this case, why Philippine society, culture, and
identity are what they’ve become. History gives us a preview of how everything worked in the
past like culture, politics, beliefs, governments. It provides an understanding of the past which
ultimately gives a better grasp in understanding the present. It helps us be aware of change and
what we need to continue to be doing and why, what we shouldn’t repeat, and what we need to
change for the future, which in return, will be history itself as well.
Studying history is necessary in order to understand our past and correct our mistakes for
the future. In addition, the following are some of the roles in which history has in learning and
studying our own society, culture and identity. First, by learning our history we would know our
origin. This would give us an understanding of our own identity. Secondly, history gives us the
key to our culture. In that way, we would know how to preserve it. In addition, history also is the
foundation of our society. By having our own understanding on the things that happened in the
past, we would know what to do in case the same thing happened in the future. Lastly, History
also explains our own society and how we struggled to have our own identity.

Think about or reflect on your past. Has your past influenced you in a way or another?
How does your past shape your identity and behavior?
The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. Consider how hard habits are to
break. Change can and does occur. All of us will have life experiences that shake us and change
us. Some may be major. Some may be minor—-but through all this our essence generally
remains unchanged. Personally, I agree that my past influenced what I am today.
For instance, before one of my loved ones passed away, I always believed that time spent
with your loved ones could be pushed back. I always believed that I would have time later on to
spend time with them or focus on them. However, after that incident, I realized how important
my life outside of school is and should be. Before this, I thought only my school/academic life
mattered and would spent most of my attention/focus on it. After I realized this, I noticed how
much I was missing out on. I didn’t have central hobbies, a family member that supports me
outside of school, etc. I’ve been working on it for the past few months, so it’s gotten a lot better.
I’ve strengthened relationships, reflected on my past self, and also learned more about myself
than I ever knew before. Now, I also make time for myself and loved ones instead of just school/
extracurricular.
My past did change the way I think of the things surrounding me including my mindset
but it didn’t last long since I don’t want it to change me completely, maybe I just picked up some
lessons. For me my past has influenced me not to make the same mistakes again and made me
think differently to things that I did wrong, I somehow think that past mistakes, regrets and bad
behaviors makes us a greater person, it might take longer for some but it’s also a choice to
change. My past can affect my behavior depends on me if I will let my past affect myself or act
like nothing happened. Either way it still depends on how I will handle things.
