Introduction
Having read the essay, I can say that Jazz originated from New Orleans', which has a rich
history and culture. For instance, it was initially a French colony known as Louisiana, which was
later given up to Spain. Shortly after the cession, however, Louisiana was given back to France
before eventually being sold to the United States in what was known as the Louisiana Purchase.
With the Cultural interactions of all these nations through Louisiana emerged Jazz in the 1920s.
History
At this time of the Louisiana Purchase by America, New Orleans also influenced black
Americans. The black Americans greatly influence New Orleans with African traits, and this
influence is what brought about the emergence of blues and Jazz into New Orleans. Blues and
Jazz would later become viewed as the musical identity of New Orleans. The cultural
interactions of the people from different backgrounds like the French, Americans, Spanish,
African, and creole are what brought about Jazz's development. People of African decent
especially added flavor to the style of Jazz. I feel this was a result of their culture, which they

towards black people was reaching an alarming rate. As a result of the violence and
discrimination, the jazz musicians had to flee Louisiana, making the Jazz culture spread across
the United States. This led to the establishment of white Jazz bands.
Spread
Jazz music later spread to other parts of the world like France. For instance, due to World
War 1, American soldiers based in France introduced jazz music there. (Ledsom, 2017) At the
same time also, the Americans back in the United States had become more used to the Jazz
music brought about by the interactions of the various diverse backgrounds. There was the shift
of local music of the Jazz music predominantly fancied by the African Americans, with its
development to become a nationwide affair. Jazz culture became a nationally accepted way of
life. For instance, home parties, riverboat sports events, and churches all accepted the Jazz way
Conclusion
In conclusion, it is essential to note that time saw modern instruments in jazz music. Jazz
bands began using instruments such as trumpets, clarinets, and trombones. (Carney, 2003) This
saw record labels start recording artists like Kid Ory and King Oliver. These two were experts in
playing those instruments, and they later mentored other artists like Louis Armstrong.
