Direct Instruction Lesson Plan

I. Class Description
This class of 5th graders contains 26 kids. There are 3 learning disabilities; 1 has
dysgraphia and 2 have dyslexia. There are also 3 English Language Learners and 1 gifted
student.

II. Subject/Skill

Science; Changes in State of Matter

III. Objective(s)

The students will be able to describe the different states of matter and their properties.

The students will be able to identify the changes of states of matter when given a

description.

The students will be able to recall terms and definitions to further expand their

knowledge of matter.

IV. Procedures

1. State Objectives and Orient students to lesson

The students will be able to describe the different states of matter and their

properties.

The students will be able to identify the changes of states of matter when given a

description.

The students will be able to recall terms and definitions to further expand their

knowledge of matter.

The teacher will present the lesson with a powerpoint that includes videos and

pictures.

Vocabulary

Matter- anything that takes up space


States of matter - gas, liquid, solid, plasma

Solid- has definite shape, definite volume

Liquid- has indefinite shape, definite volume

Gas- has indefinite shape, indefinite volume

Freezing- liquid to a solid

Condensation- gas to a liquid

Evaporation- liquid to vapor

Melting- solid to a liquid

Deposition- gas to a solid

Sublimation- solid to a gas

2. Review Prerequisites

Teacher will review the previous day's lesson of states of matter and their

properties. The teacher will explain that the purpose of this lesson is to take the

states of matter and learn about the kinds of changes they can go through and how

they can identify these changes around them.

3. Modeling
The teacher will go through the powerpoint and explain the changes that happen
to matter while providing pictures and videos to show visual examples. (1 hour)
4. Conducting Learning Probes/Guided Practice
Teacher will present an interactive presentation and call students up and have
them drag either a picture example or sentence example into the correct category.
(10-15mins)
Ex. a picture of ice cream left in the sun would be dragged into the melting
category.
5. Independent Student Practice
Students will be given a fill in the blank paper that lists the definitions and they
have to write in the correct term. It will also have a few examples and they have
to write in what kind of change is it.

Laptops (one for each student ), Powerpoint, Worksheets, Markers, Styrofoam balls,

VII. Modifications
I will be sure to include lots of pictures and video examples in the powerpoint to help
those with the dyslexia learning disability to keep them engaged and interested. Their
assignment will also be strictly picture based and they’ll match the definitions to the
pictures instead. The student with dysgraphia learning disability will be able to complete
their assignment via the computer and be given a column of answers that they’re able to
drag to the blank. The gifted student will be provided the same assignment but more
challenging examples.
VIII. Assessment
6. Assessing Student Progress/Culminating/Closing Activity
The teacher will end the lesson with a game of kahoots to review the definitions and
examples.
7. Distributed Practice and Review
Teacher will provide a printed list of definitions along with a worksheet of examples
to prepare them for the upcoming test that will be similar to such homework. They will also
be asked to capture a state of change to present to the class.
