CE-860 ESE Part-2 Spring 2020

This document contains a 6 question exam on pavement design and analysis. Question 1 asks to determine the number of ESALs for a single bus, total ESALs over 40 years, and design slab thickness for a doweled rigid pavement off-ramp using given tables. Question 2 asks to determine thickness for a flexible airport pavement using CBR method given subgrade, subbase, and base course CBR values. Question 3 asks to design a rigid pavement for an airport critical area using FAA method given aircraft weight and annual departures and subgrade conditions. Question 4 asks to determine design subgrade resilient modulus using CBR test results and Asphalt Institute method. Question 5 asks to determine total traffic repetitions over design life for

CE- 860 Pavement Design and Analysis

End Semester Exam (Part B)- DL Mode

PG Transportation
Spring Semester 2020
Name: _________________________ Aug 21st, 2020

Allowed Time = 2.5 Hours Total Marks = 80

Note: This Examination is “OPEN-BOOK”. Any Non-Communicating Calculator is allowed.

Assume any missing data:

Question No 1: A new pavement must be built for the off-ramp to the metro bus facility in Islamabad.
Assume all buses at the facility are 60 ft flyer hybrid diesel-electric buses. They are always empty (one driver

only) when they drive across the off-ramp and enter the facility. Metro logs show an average of 500 buses per

day use the off-ramp with no expected growth rate. The off-ramp pavement is to be doweled rigid pavement

using a hot mix asphalt base and 95 % reliability. The front axle, middle axle and rear axle weights are 13300

lbs, 18200 lbs and 12200 lbs respectively when the bus is empty. Determine the following. (15)

a. Number of ESALs for a single bus

b. Total number of ESALs over 40 years
c. The design slab thickness for a 40 years pavement life using the following table

RIGID PAVEMENT SLAB THICKNESS DESIGN TABLE (Question 1)

Slab Thickness (Feet)

Design Period ESALs
Reliability 75%
Reliability 85% Reliability 95%

Undoweled joints, HMA base material

< 5 Million 0.71 0.75 0.84

5-10 Million 0.80 0.85 0.94

10-25 Million 0.94 0.98 1.08

Doweled joints, HMA base material

< 25 Million 0.75 0.79 0.87

25-50 Million 0.84 0.90 0.97

> 50 Million 0.90 0.95 1.03

Question No 2: Determine the thickness requirement for a type A traffic area for a heavy-load flexible
airport pavement using the Corps of Engineer (CBR) method. The subgrade is sand and has CBR of 30. For

subbase two material options are available on the site, Material 1 has a CBR of 25 and Material 2 has a CBR of

45. The base course is a lime rock and has a CBR of 80. (15)

Question No 3: Design a rigid pavement for critical area using FAA method for a design aircraft weighing
75,000 lbs. The design aircraft is single wheel having equivalent annual departures of 80,000. The design

modulus of rupture of concrete is 650 psi and assume that no aircraft over 100,000 lbs will use the airport

facility. The subgrade conditions are as below: (15)

Sand (SP) = 11 inches with k = 200 pci
Clay (CH) with k = 50 pci

Question No 4: Sixteen CBR tests on the subgrade for the pavement yield results: 7, 5, 7, 2, 8, 6,
5, 3, 2, 4, 3, 4, 5, 4, 5 and 6. Determine the design subgrade resilient modulus for 0.2 and 2
million ESALs using the Asphalt Institute Method. (10)

Question No 5: A full-depth HMA was designed using stage construction by Asphalt Institute method. The
30 years design life was divided into 3 stages of 5, 10 and 15 years each. The damage ratios at the end of

each stage were considered 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 respectively. The thickness comes out 8 inches for stage 1 with

a subgrade CBR of 6 % and it needs an overlay of 2 and 3 inches at the end of stage 2 and stage 3

respectively. Determine the total actual number of traffic repetitions on the pavement in the design life. (15)

Question No 6: A flexible pavement is designed for a dual gear aircraft weighing 75,000 lbs and
departures 15000 of the design aircraft. For the non-critical area the surface, base and subbase

thicknesses comes out 3, 6 and 14 inches respectively. Find the strength of subgrade in terms of resilient

modulus using FAA design procedure. (10)
