Tutorial-4 Uniform Flow-2

This document provides instructions for solving several problems related to uniform flow in open channels. It asks the reader to: determine the dimensions of a concrete-lined trapezoidal channel to carry a discharge of 7.0 m3/s; show that an efficient triangular channel section has a Reynolds number of (Ye/2√2); use Posey's method and then the zero shear method to find discharge for a compound channel cross section at depths of 0.2 m and 1.0 m; determine the limit slope, discharge and critical depth for a 1.2 m wide rectangular channel lined with smooth concrete; and design a trapezoidal channel to carry 75 m3/s with a maximum slope of 0.0005 using a

Tutorial-4

Uniform Flow-2
1. Determine the dimensions of concrete lined (n=0.015) trapezoidal channel of efficient
proportions to carry a discharge of 7.0 m3/s. The bed slope of the channel is 0.0006 and
m=1.25.
2. Show that a hydraulically efficient triangular section has Re = (Ye / 2√ 2)
3. For the compound section shown in figure below, find the discharge when (a) h = 0.2 m
and (h) 1.0 m. Assume n=0.02 and S0=0.0009 for all parts of the perimeter. Use Posey’s
method for calculating partial discharge.

4. Solve problem (3) by using zero shear method for partial discharges.
5. A rectangular channel 1.20 m wide is lined with smooth concrete (n = 0.013). Determine
the limit slope and the corresponding discharge and critical depth.
6. Design a trapezoidal channel to carry 75 m 3/s. The maximum permissible slope is
0.0005. It is proposed to adopt a brick in cement mortar lining. The soil is classified as
average sandy soil.
