This document discusses open channel flow and provides definitions and formulas related to its key characteristics. It asks the reader to:
1) Define the differences between steady/unsteady flow and uniform/non-uniform flow, as well as laminar and turbulent flow.
2) Define geometric elements of channels including depth of flow, wetted perimeter, hydraulic mean depth, and hydraulic depth of flow.
3) Draw specific energy diagrams and show alternate and critical depths for constant discharges.
4) Derive an expression for critical depth in a rectangular channel.
5) Find expressions for critical depth and solve example problems involving uniform flow calculations and determining necessary bed slopes.

Open Channel Flow
1. In case of open channels, mention the difference between: I. Steady and unsteady flow II. Uniform and non-uniform flow III. Laminar and turbulent flow 2. Define the following geometric elements of channel: I. Depth of flow II. Wetted perimeter III. Hydraulic mean depth IV. Hydraulic depth of flow 3. Draw specific energy diagrams for various constant discharges and show the alternate and critical depths. 4. Prove that the critical depth at which minimum value of specific energy occurs in a wide rectangular channel is (q2/g)1/3, where q= discharge per unit width and g= gravitational acceleration. 5. Find an expression for the critical depth in terms of specific energy (E) for a rectangular channel. 6. A rectangular channel 2 m wide has velocity of flow of 1 m/s. If the bed slope of channel is 1/2500, calculate the depth of flow for uniform condition. Assume Manning’s n=0.015 (Answer: y = 0.962m) 7. A flow of 100 liters per second flows down in a rectangular channel of width 60 m and having adjustable bottom slope. If Chezy’s constant is 56, find the bottom slope necessary for uniform flow with a depth of 30 cm. (Answer: S = 1 in 1510) 8. The flow of water through a 10m wide channel is 18 m3/s and the depth of water in the channel is 800mm. Determine, Specific energy of flow, critical depth, critical velocity and minimum specific energy. State whether the flow is subcritical or supercritical. (Answer: E = 1.058m, YC= 0.691m, VC= 2.604 m/s, Emin= 1.037m)
