Impact Analysis of Aircraft Using ANSYS Explicit Dynamics
Impact Analysis of Aircraft Using ANSYS Explicit Dynamics
MIII–PREPROCESSING TECHNIQUES
Impact analysis of aircraft using
ANSYS explicit dynamics
Problem Description
This workshop demonstrates the use of Explicit
dynamics Analysis in Mechanical application by
examining an Aircraft impact. This tutorial attempts to
show you how to setup an explicit dynamics simulation.
Features Demonstrated
•Body interaction
•Loads and Boundary conditions
•Setup the Analysis Settings for solver
•Define the Mesh parameters
•Define output results.
MIII–PREPROCESSING TECHNIQUES
Setting Up the Analysis System
1.
2.
MIII–PREPROCESSING TECHNIQUES
3. Double click Engineering data in order to Access the materials
library and define the ones used for this simulation
4. In engineering data , Access to the engineering data sources
5. Select the Explicit materials library
6. Select the “CONC140Mpa” and the “ALUMINUM”
7. Return to the Project schematic
4.

MIII–PREPROCESSING TECHNIQUES
Define the Model
8. Launch Mechanical by double-click in the Model cell.
9. Once the mechanical application is open, go to geometry branch
and select all the bodies that are part of the cylinder, then change
the materials definition from Structural Steel to CONC140Mpa
10. In geometry branch, the aircraft geometry and change the material
from Structural Steel to ALUMINUM

Define the Model
11. Review the connections
As you can see a default Frictionless interaction, using Trajectory Contact
detection, is scoped to all bodies.
- Activates frictionless contact between any external node and face in the
entire model that may come into contact during the simulation.
11.
MIII–PREPROCESSING TECHNIQUES
Define the Model
12. In Mesh branch, Select all the bodies that are part of the cylinder,
RMB> select all, holding Ctrl deselect the aircraft geometry
13. Insert a Body sizing, set the element size to 6e-2 m
14. Insert another Body sizing scoping the aircraft geometry, set the
element size to 8e-3 m
12.
13.
14.
MIII–PREPROCESSING TECHNIQUES
Define the Model
15. In explicit dynamics branch> initial conditions> RMB > insert
velocity
16. Change the “define by” from vector to components
17. Set the value as shown in the image
18. Scope the aircraft geometry
15.
16.
18. 17.
MIII–PREPROCESSING TECHNIQUES
Analysis settings
19. In explicit dynamics branch > analysis settings, define the end
time as 1e-3 s
20. Leave the rest of the settings by default
19.
MIII–PREPROCESSING TECHNIQUES
Supports and boundary conditions
21. In explicit dynamics branch insert a fixed support scoping
the faces as shown bellow
22. To insert the fixed support in the environment tab>
Structural> fixed support
22.
MIII–PREPROCESSING TECHNIQUES
23. In Solution branch insert a Total deformation and an
Equivalent Stress results
24. To insert the Total deformation, in Solution tab> Results>
Deformation> Total deformation
25. To insert the equivalent Stress, in Solution tab> Results>
Stress> Equivalent (Von misses), then hit solve
24.
25.
MIII–PREPROCESSING TECHNIQUES
Results
26. Review the Total deformation and the Stress results, then
close mechanical application
