EDU 214 Lesson Plan: Picture This! Grade Level: 4-5

This lesson plan teaches 4th and 5th grade students to communicate through visual storytelling using pictures instead of words. Students will create a 3-4 sentence story using only images by finding and inserting clipart, drawings, or photos. They will then write out the full story text. Students will then interpret each other's picture stories and recreate the story using different images. The goal is to see if the meaning can be understood through pictures alone and if stories stay intact through this retelling process. Students will be assessed on including a title, 3-4 sentence picture story, and the written story text.

EDU 214 Lesson Plan

* Picture This!

* Grade level: 4-5

* ISTE Standard 4: Innovative Designer: Students use a variety of technologies within a

design process to identify and solve problems by creating new, useful or
imaginative solutions.

* Language Arts: Writing; write and/or draw pictures about a specific topic or idea.

* Objective: Utilizing the students creativity, while also teaching them to research effectively.
This assignment should teach the students the power of communication while also
knowing there are multiple options to create your story. Students will be able to find
photos on google, use clip art, or drawing tools in a word document.

* Material Needed: a computer, mouse, and the internet. Also, the student will be completing
this assignment using word processing software.

* Suggested group size: 1-2

* Procedures: As we know many students struggle with reading and even communicating. Some
students prefer looking at pictures rather than reading text. In this assignment, you will
be creating a simple story using only pictures. Imagine you are trying to tell a story to a
child who has limited hearing, or trouble reading. This can be a fun way for students to
communicate in a different way, while also seeing what it’s like for those who have
difficulty reading.

1. Come up with a simple narrative like “A Day at the Beach” or “My Favorite Food”.
Once you have the narrative, replace as many of the words as you can with pictures, this
way you will be telling a story simply through images only. You can use clip art, drawing
tool , or google image. You can use all tools, or just one, just as long as your story can be
understood.

2. Once you have converted your story into pictures, type-out your short story on a
separate page. This will be the answer key. You will be able to see if the pictures
accurately represented the story.

3. Once everyone has turned in a picture story, each student will then get another
student’s story and try to see if they know what it is about just by the pictures chosen.
Once they think they know, they will then recreate that story using only pictures, but
different from the original. Think of the game “telephone”. The goal is to keep the story
the same and the better the pictures the more clear the story will be.
* Assessment: To get full credit I would like a title (this can be written in text, not pictures) and
the story, which should be between 3-4 sentences only written in picture form. Lastly,
the written story on a separate page. The story also needs to have the child’s name, and
date.

**Tips** You can get as creative or specific as you want. Ex: I love pizza could be your first
sentence and this could be converted to :

I only used the “clip art” tool in my word processing software to create this, but you can use
images from the internet to help make the story more detailed.
