Lesson: Dividing Decimal with Up to 2 Decimal Places

1
About the Lesson

This module is all about decimal numbers. As Mathematics involves quantifying

objects in an accurate and precise manner, whole numbers are not enough. We have to
consider the value of a part of the whole number such that when we weigh vegetables,
a kilo has a big difference to 500 grams. This is where the concept of decimal comes in.

This lesson enhances you to sharpen your ability in dividing decimals with up to 2
decimal places. Series of activities and exercises are given for you to master the
competency.

The term decimal came from the Latin word decimus which means
tenth. This goes to show that decimals have 10 as its base. To illustrate,
if one is divided into 10 equal parts, each part is one-tenth or 1/10. To
express this in decimal, it is written as 0.1, which means that 0.1 is
lesser than 1.

Objective/Learning Competency

In this lesson you are expected to:

1. Divide the decimals with up to 2 decimal places.
2. Write quotient in dividing decimals with accuracy

Lesson Proper

I. Activity

3
Dynan needs the following materials for his project in EPP. How much will
each material cost?

________ 1. needle - 4 for ₱3.24

________ 2. thread – 2 for ₱16.80
________ 3. pin cushion - 7 for ₱56.70
________ 4. emery bag – 5 for ₱66.35
________ 5. tape measure – 2 for ₱36.50

II. Questions to Ponder

Have you experienced going far places? What is the farthest place you’ve
travel? How many kilometers was it?

Study the problem below.

Dr. Garcia jogs every day, if he jogged 1.15 kilometers in

0.25 hours. What was his average speed?

How will you find the answer to this problem?

III. Example and Discussion

This time, you will learn how to divide decimals up to 2 decimal places.

To divide a decimal, change the divisor into a whole number. To do this,

multiply both the divisor and the dividend by the same power of 10 or
simply move the decimal places to the right until the divisor becomes a
whole number. Then proceed to division. Let us study the example below.

Going back to the problem, let us get the average speed of Dr. Garcia as he
jogged. Remember, to get the speed, we will divide the distance by the time
spent.

Numbers of kilometers he jogs every day – 1.15km

Numbers of hours he jogged everyday -- 0.25hours

Step 1. Move the decimal point of the divisor two places to the right as well as the
decimal point of the dividend, the same places as you move the decimal point of the
divisor to make both a whole number. (see illustration)

Step 2. Divide. Continue dividing until the difference is equal to zero.

4
Step 3. Check
Multiply the quotient and the divisor. The answer must be equal to the
dividend.

Therefore, Dr. Garcia’s average speed in jogging daily is 4.6km/hr.

Example 2. Divide 0.45 by 0.6

Step 1: Multiply the divisor by 10 to make it whole number.

0.6 x 10 = 6

Multiply the dividend by 10 to it a whole number also.

0.45 x 10 = 4.5

Step 2. Write a decimal point in the dividend and a zero in the ones place of the
decimal.

Step 3. Divide. Continue dividing until the difference is equal to zero.

Step 4. Check. Multiply the quotient and divisor, the answer must be equal to the
dividend.
0.75 x 6 = 4.5

Therefore, the answer is 0.75

IV. Exercises

A. Find the quotient of the following. Show your solution.

5
1. 7.26 ÷ 0.22 = n 2. 31.85 ÷ 0.91 = n

3. 17.92 ÷ 0.64 = n 4. 7.65 ÷ 0.85 = n

B. Encircle the letter of the correct answer.

1) 1.20 ÷ 0.4= n A. 2 B. 3 C. 4 D. 5

2) 10.08 ÷ 0.21 = n A. 48 B. 38 C. 47 D. 45

3) 21.45 ÷ 0.33 = n A. 60 B. 62 C. 56 D. 65

4) 67.95 ÷ 0.45 = n A. 112 B. 151 C. 121 D. 151

_________ 4) 32.56 ÷ 0.08 D. 605

_________ 5) 54.42 ÷ 0.06 E. 907

Summary

To divide a decimal, change the divisor into a whole number. To

do this, multiply both the divisor and the dividend by the same power of
10 or simply move the decimal places to the right until the divisor 6
becomes a whole number. Then proceed to division.
Following the examples shown above, let us answer this word problem together.

Tatay Amay bought 1.5 L of soft drink. He wants to share these

with 6 people including his family. How much soft drinks did
each of his family drink?

The problem asks for share of cake each visitor ate. Since there are only 1.5L
of soft drink to be shared by 6 people, we are going to divide to determine how much
each have eaten.

Step 1: Write zero and a decimal point in the quotient as well as a zero in the tenths
place of the dividend
0.
6 1.5

Step 2. Divide. Continue dividing until the difference is equal to zero.

0.25
6 1.50
-1 2
30
-30
0

Step 3. Check. Multiply the quotient and the divisor. The answer must be equal to
the Dividend.
0.25 x 6 = 1.25

Therefore, each of his family drunk 0.25 of soft drink.
