1. Introduce The INTRODUCTION Explanation Listening Lecture Are you able to
Topic Sociometry introduce the
 Sociometry is “a method for, topic.?
describing, discovering and
evaluating social status, structure,
and development through measuring
the extent of acceptance or rejection
between individuals in groups.”
 Franz defines sociometry as “a
method used for the discovery and
manipulation of social
configurations by measuring the
attractions and repulsions between
individuals in a group.”

2. Define the topic DEFINITION OF SOCIOMETRY Explanation Listening Lecture Can you tell the
Sociometry It is ‘the mathematical study of definition of
psychological properties of populations, the sociometry
experimental technique of and the results
obtained by application of quantitative
methods’.
Moreno, 1953.

3. Explain The MEANING AND PURPOSE OF Explanation Listening Lecture What are the
Meaning And SOCIOMETRY And chart Meaning And
Purpose Of MEANING Purpose Of
Sociometry  As Moreno says, “Choices are Sociometry
fundamental facts in all ongoing
human relations, choices of people
and choices of things.  It is
immaterial whether the motivations
are known to the chooser or not; it is
immaterial whether [the choices] are
inarticulate or highly expressive,
whether rational or irrational.  They
do not require any special
justification as long as they are
spontaneous and true to the self of
the chooser.  They are facts of the
first existential order.”

PURPOSE
 The purpose of sociometry is to
facilitate group task effectiveness
and satisfaction of participants by
bringing about greater degrees of
mutuality amongst people and
greater authenticity in relationships.

4. Explain The Roots ROOTS OF SOCIOMETRY Explanation Listening Lecture Can you Explain
Of Sociometry & LCD The Roots Of
 The term sociometry relates to its Sociometry
Latin etymology, socius meaning
companion, and metrum meaning
measure.    As these roots imply,
sociometry is a way of measuring
the degree of relatedness among
people.  Measurement of relatedness
can be useful not only in the
assessment of behavior within
groups, but also for interventions to
bring about positive change and for
determining the extent of change

 Jacob Levy Moreno coined the term

sociometry and conducted the first
long-range sociometric study from
1932-38 at the New York State
Training School for Girls in Hudson,
New York. Jacob Moreno defined
sociometry as “the inquiry into the
evolution and organization of groups
and the position of individuals
within them.” He goes on to write
“As the …science of group
organization -it attacks the problem
not from the outer structure of the
group, the group surface, but from
the inner structure.”

5. Describe The BRANCHES OF SOCIOMETRY Explanation Listening Lecture What are the
Branches Of & LCD Branches Of
Sociomerty RESEARCH SOCIOMETRY Sociomerty
 Research sociometry is action
research with groups exploring the
socio-emotional networks of
relationships using specified criteria
e.g. who in this group do you want
to sit beside you at work? Who in
the group do you go to for advice on
a work problem? Who in the group
do you see providing satisfying
leadership in the pending project?
Sometimes called network
explorations, research sociometry is
concerned with relational patterns in
small (individual and small group)
and larger populations, such as
organizations and neighborhoods

APPLIED SOCIOMETRY
 Applied sociometrists utilize a range
of methods to assist people and
groups review, expand and develop
their existing psycho-social
networks of relationships. Both
fields of sociometry exist to produce
through their application, greater
spontaneity and creativity of both
individuals and groups

6. Explain The CONCEPT OF SOCIOGRAM AND Explanation Listening Lecture & Tell about
Concept Of SOCIOMATRIX Poster concept of
Sociogram And sociogram and
Sociomatrix SOCIOGRAM sociometrix

• A sociogram is a visual
representation of the relationships
among characters in a literary text.
• Sociograms can be used at first to
help students understand the
relationships among characters.
• The spatial relationship on the page
should in some way represent each
of the character’s relationship with
the main character, as well as with
each other.
Lines/ arrows are used to show the
‘direction and nature’ of the relationship for
example: strength / weakness, friend/ foe,
and dominance/

SOCIOMATRIX

7. Describe the APPLICATION OF SOCIOMETRY IN Explanation Listening Lecture Can you explain
Application Of CLASSROOM & LCD the Application
Sociometry In • Every teacher knows that the group Of Sociometry
Classroom of students with which he/she works In Classroom
is more than an aggregation of
individuals.
• He/she knows that the group has
form and structure.
• Some individuals are more accepted
by the group while some are more
rejected.
• A sociogram is an important tool for
teachers.
• Its purpose is to discover group
structures.
• Its value to the teacher is in its
potentiality for developing greater
understanding of group behavior .
• It is important for understanding the
relationships within classroom.
• Once this relationship is understood
by the teacher, group work can be
better facilitated for greater learning
to occur.
• When working with students who
tend to socially withdraw or isolate
themselves
• These results can then be used when
assigning groups and arranging
seating

8. Explain The Types TYPES OF SOCIOMETRIC Explanation Listening Lecture Can you explain
Of Sociometric & LCD the Types Of
THE NOMINATION TECHNIQUE Sociometric
 In this relatively direct form of
approach, a question is so framed
that the individual is asked to name
a limited number of people from
within the group with whom he
would choose to associate on the
basis of some stated criterion.
 A typical question which could
serve as the basis for an analysis of
pupil choices might take this form:
“Name the boy or girl you most want to sit
next to as your first choice, then the one you
want as second choice, and as third choice.
It is hard to arrange seats so that everyone
will have at least one of his choices.”

THE RATING-SCALE APPROACH

 Devices using this form ask the

respondent to rate all the other
members of his group, using some
predetermined scale.
 Typical of this approach is the Ohio
Social Acceptance Scale, published
by Ohio State University.

The descriptions serve to guide the
respondent in assigning scale values to his
peers:
“I would like to have this person as one of
my very, very best friends. I would like to
spend a lot of time with this person. I would
enjoy going places with this person. I would
tell some of my troubles and secrets to this
person and would do everything I could to
help this person out of trouble…………..”

THE “WHO’S WHO” APPROACH

• This sociometric technique

constitutes an excellent means of
obtaining insights into pupil
difficulties in meeting the standards
set by their peers.
9. Explain The VALIDITY Explanation Listening Lecture What are the
Validity Of Validity Of
Sociometry Does sociometry really measure Sociometry?
something useful? Jane Mouton, Robert
Blake and Benjamin Fruchter reviewed the
early applications of sociometry and
concluded that the number of sociometric
choices do tend to predict such performance
criteria as productivity, combat
effectiveness, training ability, and
leadership. An inverse relationship also
holds: the number of sociometric choices
received are negatively correlated with
undesirable aspects of behavior such as
accident-proneness, sick bay attendance and
frequency of disciplinary charges”

(Mouton, Blake, and Fruchter )

Here are some representative early

sociometric studies:

 One study found a significant positive

correlation between group sociometric
cohesion and field performance of small
military combat units (Goodacre, Daniel
M.,).

 Voluntary re-grouping of construction

workers based on sociometric choices
resulted in a superior level of output, a drop
in monthly turnover, and 5% savings in total
production (Van Zelst, R. H.)
Another study of voluntary regrouping of
construction workers in which workers in
the experimental groups chose their work
partner resulted in superior performance by
the experimental group on factors of job
satisfaction, turnover rate, index of labor
cost, index of material cost. Financial
savings were such that every 29th house
was “free,” relative to the cost of
construction by the control group

(Van Zelst, R. H.).

 Sociometric ratings by coworkers for

desirability as work partners and other job
related activities correlate with positive
attitudes toward work and with quality and
quantity of performance on the job
(Springer, Doris).

 Accident proneness is inversely

correlated with sociometric choices
received. (Speroff, B., and W. Kerr.)

 Consistent with these findings about

safety are studies in military settings which
show that flight accidents, frequency of sick
bay attendance, and number of disciplinary
offenses are negatively related with the
number of sociometric choices received
when the criterion measures a positive
aspect of behavior (Zeleny, L. D.)
 A study of leadership showed that when
leaders were chosen by sociometric
procedures, their groups were more efficient
than when members not seen as leaders
were assigned that role (Rock, M. L., and E.
N. Hay.)

 A study of navy pilots suggested that low

morale and cliques may result when the
official leader is not a sociometric star
(Jenkins, John G. in Moreno,).

 A study of choices of playmates in

fourth-grade children showed a high
correlation between the choices children
made on the sociometric test and the
choices children made in actual play

(Byrd, Eugene.).
