Quotient Quotient Divisor: N n-1 n-1 n-2 n-1 X 0 N 0 1 2 N

This document provides instruction on dividing polynomials using long division and synthetic division. It begins with an overview and objectives, then demonstrates long division through examples. Students are asked to complete practice problems dividing polynomials using both long division and synthetic division. The document concludes with an evaluation to assess understanding of key concepts like identifying polynomials, leading coefficients, quotients, remainders, and the long division process.

Mathematics 10

Quarter 1
MELC: Performs division of polynomials using long division and synthetic division.
I. Overview
In this self-learning activity you will be doing task which help you divide polynomials using long
division and synthetic division.
II. Objective
At the end of the day, you will be able to:
 Divide polynomials using long division and synthetic division.
III. Development of the Lesson:
Your lesson today is about dividing polynomials. Let’s review lessons in algebraic expressions.
Operations involving algebraic expressions and exponents then to recall answer.

Activity 1: Spot the Difference

Answer number 1-5 on page 48. Did the activity recall you what is polynomial expression? So, we
are going to define a polynomial expression.
A polynomial expression P(x) is an expression of the form anx n+an-1xn-1+an-2xn-1+.ax+a0,an≠0 where the
nonnegative integer n is called degree of the polynomial and coefficients a 0,a1,a2…an are real numbers.

Example: using long division:

Quotient
Divisor Quotient

Remainder

Study examples on page 58 – 59

You can write the result

2 x 2 +5 x−23 2
=2 x−5+ then perform
2 x −5 x +5

Activity 3. Divide and write it in form

1. (5x2-17x-5)÷(x-4)
2. 6x3-16x2+17x-6÷(x-2)

How did you find the activity? What can you say about the procedure?
There is a shorter procedure when a polynomial is to be divided by a binomial of the form (x-r). This
method is called synthetic division.

Example. Use synthetic division to divide p(x)=(3x3+4x2+8) by x+2

Follow the step:

Step 1: Arrange the coefficients of P(x) in 3 4 0 8

descending powers of x, placing 0s for the
missing terms. The leading coefficient of P(x)
becomes the first entry of the third row. 3
Step 2: Place the value of r in the upper left -2 3 4 0 8
corner. In this example, x – r = x + 2 = x – (-2), so
r = -2. 3
Step 3: The first number in the second row (-6) is -2 3 4 0 8
the product of r (-2) and the number in the third -6
row (3) of the preceding column. The second 3 -2
number un the third row (-2) is the sum of the
two numbers (4 and -6) above it.
Step 4: Repeat the procedure described in Step 3 -2 3 4 0 8
until the last number in the third row is obtained. -6 4 -8
3 -2 4 0
Step 5: Write the quotient Q(x). Note that the
degree of Q(x) is one less than the degree of P(x). Q(x) = 3x2-2x+4, R = 0
The entries in the third row give the coefficients
of Q(x) and the remainder R.

Now, that you have learned about the division of polynomials, your goal is to apply the key concepts of
dividing polynomials. Answer activity 4, page 63 nos. 1 and 2.

IV.Exercises:
Use synthetic division to find the quotient and remainder in following. Write your complete solutions on
a separate sheet of paper.
1. (3x3+x2-22x-25) ÷ (x-2) Quotient: ________________________________________
Remainder: ______________________________________

2. (x3+4x2-x-25) ÷(x+5) Quotient: ________________________________________

Remainder: ______________________________________

V.Evaluation :Choose the letter that best answers the questions.
