Unit 3 - Cell Energy Guided Notes

Cellular processes photosynthesis and cellular respiration fuel each other through their reactants and products. Photosynthesis occurs in chloroplasts of plant cells and produces glucose and oxygen from carbon dioxide, water, and light energy. Cellular respiration occurs in mitochondria of both plant and animal cells and produces carbon dioxide, water, and ATP energy from glucose and oxygen. Aerobic cellular respiration using oxygen is most efficient and produces the most ATP, while anaerobic respiration without oxygen is least efficient and produces only 2 ATP.

Photosynthesis Sep 29th
What you need to know:
● _Where_____ it occurs in a _plant____ cell
● _Chemical_______ formula
● Relationship to cellular respiration
Where it occurs:
● Photosynthesis is a cell energy process that _ONLY___ occurs in _plant____ cells!
● The organelle that carries out this process is called the _chloroplast________.
● Plants use photosynthesis to produce _glucose______ (sugar), and are known as
_autotrophs_______ as a result. (auto- = “_self___”; troph = “_food____”)
○ Organisms that _consume_____ their food are called _heterotrophs________.
● Chloroplasts are unique organelles that are made up of stacks of _thylakoid__
membranes called granum.
● Chloroplasts also contain a pigment molecule called _chlorophyll____ captures
_light_____ energy.
Chemical Formula:
● CO2 + H2O + light energy → C6H12O6 + O2
● _Carbon Dioxide______ + _Water_____ + light energy → _Glucose__ + _Oxygen___
● Reactants (what goes in): _Carbon Dioxide__, _Water____, and _Light____ energy
● Products (what goes out): _Glucose______ (sugar) + _Oxygen______
● Reactants: plants take in carbon dioxide gas through tiny openings in the leaves called
_stomata_, water through the _roots_, and sunlight energy is captured by
_chlorophyll__ (green molecule in chloroplast).
● Products: plants use glucose to make _ATP___ energy and release oxygen as a waste
product through the _stomata____.

Cellular Respiration Sep 30th

What you need to know:
● Where it occurs in ALL __eukaryotes________ (animal and plant cells)
● Chemical __formula_______
● Relationship to photosynthesis
● __Aerobic______ vs. __anaerobic_______ respiration
Where it occurs:
● Cellular respiration is a cell energy process that occurs in _ALL___ eukaryotic cells,
including _animal_____ cells and _plant_____ cells!
● It begins in the _cytoplasm________ and is completed in the _mitochondria________.
○ Mitochondria = “powerhouse of the cell” because _ATP___ energy is made.
● The first step of cellular respiration, called _glycolysis__, takes place in the cytoplasm.
● Everything else occurs in the _mitochondria_______, a membrane-bound organelle
found in animal and plant cells.
Chemical formula:
● C6H12O6 + O2 → CO2 + H2O + ATP energy
● _Glucose________ + _Oxygen___ → _Carbon Dioxide___ + _Water__ + _ATP____
energy
● Reactants (what goes in): _glucose_____ (sugar) + _oxygen______
● Products (what goes out): _carbon dioxide________ + _water_____ + _ATP__ energy
● Reactants: we take in our glucose by _eating__ (plants make it through
_photosynthesis_) and our oxygen by _inhaling____ it (breathing it in).
● Products: we release our carbon dioxide and water waste by _exhaling_______
(breathing out), and ATP energy is used to power other _chemical_____ reactions and
processes in cells.

Photosynthesis vs. Cellular Respiration

What is their relationship?
● Photosynthesis and cellular respiration fuel one another. The _products_ of one
process become the _reactants_____ of the other process. Their chemical formulas are
__reversed_______.
Summary: what you need to know

Cell Energy Process Location Reactants Products

Photosynthesis Chloroplast of plant Carbon Dioxide, Glucose, Oxygen

cells Water, Light energy

Cellular Respiration Mitochondria of Glucose, Oxygen Carbon Dioxide,

plant and animal Water, ATP energy
cells

Cellular Respiration: Aerobic vs. Anaerobic

● Cellular respiration begins with a process called _glycolysis______, which happens in
the cytoplasm and breaks down _glucose______.
● If _oxygen______ is available, cellular respiration will continue in the
_mitochondria______ and __maximum_______ ATP (about _36__) will be produced
from one glucose molecule.
○ This is called _AEROBIC_______ RESPIRATION (aero- = “_oxygen____”)
● If oxygen is _not__ available, only glycolysis can occur and __minimum_______ ATP
(_2_) will be produced.
○ This is called __ANAEROBIC_______ RESPIRATION (an- = “_not__, without”)
● Aerobic respiration = _most____ efficient, most ATP molecules are produced when
_oxygen_____ is available.
● Anaerobic respiration = __least____ efficient, only 2 ATP molecules are produced when
oxygen is _not__ available.
● _Anaerobic____ respiration releases waste products and is also called
_fermentation________.
○ __Alcoholic________ fermentation: occurs in yeast, _ethanol______ is a
waste product.
○ _Lactic acid______ fermentation: occurs in humans, _lactic__ _acid____ is a
waste product that leads to _soreness____ in muscles.
