Nuclear power plant descriptionnn

A nuclear power plant is consisted of containment building, turbine building and a cooling tower. The containment
building is the nuclear island of the nuclear power plant. It houses the nuclear reactor wherein the fuel assemblies can be
found which contains many fuel rods and control rods. These fuel rods are loaded with uranium atoms that has a total of
235 protons and neutrons which make it as a lighter isotope and less tightly bound compared to the other tightly-bound
uranium atoms which consist of a total of 238 protons and neutrons. Since this U-235 atom is less tightly-bound, its
uranium nuclei can be easily separated into halves when stroked by a neutron, which will release heat energy and
produce neutrons. The process of splitting a large nucleus into two smaller nuclei is called nuclear fission. Once the
nuclear reactor reaches the nominal power level, the control rods will be lowered into the nuclear reactor to tame the
spiraling chain reactions and capture the excess number of neutrons to acquire the steady-state operation. It will also
make the neutrons scatter and slow down to increase the capture of uranium nuclei and the rate of fission. After the heat
energy was released, water will be pumped inside the nuclear reactor to absorb the heat energy produced. However,
even if the water inside the nuclear reactor is heated up to 570°F, it does not boil up due to the pressurizer that maintains
the water pressure constant at 160 bar. The water used in the primary circulation system must never leave the
containment building because it is contaminated due to the direct contact with the fuel rods. The containment building also
houses the steam generator in which the heated water from the nuclear reactor will be pumped inside to boil the water
and convert it into steam. The produced steam will be fed through the set of pipes that are towards the turbine building.
The turbine building is the conventional island of the nuclear power plant. It houses the turbine generator in which the
steam produced from the steam generator rotates the turbines that are connected to the electrical generator which in turn
produces electricity. It also houses the condenser in which it converts the steam into liquid form and return the water back
into the steam generator to repeat the process of producing electricity from the pressurized steam to mechanical work
used to drive the generators. The water in the secondary circulation system in the turbine building is not contaminated and
often comes from a close river or cooled water from the cooling tower which provides the cooling circulation system in the
power plant.
