Assignment 2

This document contains 7 questions for an assignment on principles of communication systems. The questions cover topics like: 1) Calculating the power, peak frequency deviation, peak phase deviation, and bandwidth of an angle-modulated signal with multiple sinusoidal modulating signals. 2) Finding the peak frequency deviation and estimating the bandwidth of FM and PM signals given various modulation parameters. 3) Sketching the time-domain and frequency-domain plots at different stages of demodulating an FM signal that has been modulated by a periodic square wave, and labeling important aspects like sidebands.

Question# 5
An angle-modulated signal with carrier frequency ωc = 2π × 105 is described by the following
equation,

ϕEM (t) = 5 cos (ωc t + 20 sin 1000π t + 10 sin 2000π t + z sin 2000πt )

(a) Find the power of the modulated signal Pavg

(b) Find the peak frequency deviation Δf
(c) Find the peak phase deviation Δθ
(d) Find the deviation ratio β
(d) Estimate the bandwidth of ϕEM (t)

Note: If your roll number is FA19-ABC-123, then take the variable z as z=19+123.

Question# 6
Given m(t) = exp(-t/2) , fc = 104 Hz, kf = 6000π , and kp = z + 8000π :
(a) Find peak frequency deviation, Δf, for FM and PM signals.
(b) Estimate the bandwidths of the FM and PM waves.

Hint: Find M (f) and find its 3dB bandwidth (B << Δf)
Note: If your roll number is FA18-ABC-123, then take the variable z as z=123-18.

Question# 7
A periodic square wave m(t) shown in the figure below, frequency-modulates a carrier of frequency fc
= 10 kHz with Δf = z kHz.

The carrier peak amplitude is Ac. The resulting FM signal is demodulated by using the procedure
illustrated in the Figure below. Sketch both time-domain and frequency-domain plots of the signals
observed at the stages (b), (c), (d), and (e), also label the plots with any important information (e.g.,
indicate the instances where maximum and minimum frequency is being generated, sidebands, etc).

Note: If your roll number is FA18-ABC-123, then take the variable z as z=123/18.
