NATURE AND FUNCTIONS OF SOCIAL SCIENCE DISCIPLINES

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

Science can be described generally as an effort to understand, explain and

make predictions about the world using distinct methods of inquiry in an attempt to
construct theories. Science can be classified into two main branches known as natural
science and social science. Natural science is a branch of science that deals with the
natural world whereas social science is a branch of science that deals with human
society and social relationships. Thus, the main difference between natural science
and social science is that natural science studies natural events whereas social
science studies the human society. (https://pediaa.com/difference-between-
natural-science-and-social-science/)

Meanwhile, Humanities are academic disciplines that study aspects of human

society and culture. It expounds the idea of how humans originated and how its values
and cultures emanate and evolve over time. The relationship of Social Science and
Humanities is evident as it both focuses on human lives and culture. which will be
studied as we go further especially in learning the nature and functions of both fields.

The term "social science" has been used to describe the systematic study of
human interaction, which encompasses many disciplines such as economics, politics,
psychology, history, geography and a lot more. It deals with humans as well as its
interaction to the society and environment and how these interactions can affect
human lives from past to present and up to the future.

In this introductory course, it will provide learner an overview of the different

nature and functions of social science and its relationship to natural sciences and
humanities. Furthermore, it will also discuss the historical origins and development of
each social science discipline. Additionally, it will examine the scientific slant in the
study of the social world, and discuss the various methods of social science inquiry.

1
Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times
Finally, it will look at the overlapping areas in the various disciplines, study how
each discipline would approach the study of a particular social issue, and offer insight
into an integrated approach to studying and researching issues of interest to social
scientists specifically its connections to natural sciences and humanities.

LEARNING COMPETENCY
Differentiate the nature and functions of Social Science disciplines with the
natural sciences and humanities. (Quarter 1, Weeks 1-2).

EMERGENCE OF SOCIAL SCIENCE DISCIPLINES

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

Social sciences are vital part of today's culture and touch on all areas of life. It
has been very beneficial to us and has helped us grow as a society. As such, the need
for social science emerged when the society grew and experts thought of analyzing
the society using sciences.
Social sciences are group of academic disciplines that study human aspects of
the world, in particular those involving social behavior and society. These disciplines,
focusing on the study of human social behavior, includes a variety of ways – from
understanding how minds work, to how societies as a whole function. The major social
sciences are Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Linguistics, Political
Science Psychology, Demography and Sociology.
Social Science Disciplines
Anthropology is a social science that deals with the study of humankind in all is
aspects: culture and development. It is the study of relationship between biological
traits and socially acquired characteristics. It is the study of what makes us human
which is why sometimes called as the study of human.
Economics is the study of how individuals and societies make decisions about
ways to use scarce resources to fulfill wants and needs. It seeks to understand
people’s activities concerning production, distribution and consumption of goods and
services.
Geography focuses on the distribution of the features of the physical
environment and of the people who use those features. It also deals with the study of
natural environment and how it influence social and cultural development.
History, which means “story of man”, is a social science in the sense that it is a
systematic attempt to learn about and verify past events and relate them to one
another and to the present. In other words, it study the past of humanity.

12
Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times
Linguistics is the scientific study of language. It deals with the study of every
aspect of language. It enables us to understand how language works, and how it is
used, developed and preserved over time.
Political Science can be defined as the systematic study of state and
government. It focuses on the theory and practice of government and politics.
Sometimes, it can be simply defined as the study of politics.
Psychology, derived from the Greek words “psyche” (soul/mind) and “logos”
(study), is the scientific study of human behavior and the mental process that is tested
through scientific research (should be systematic in approach). It is a multifaceted
discipline and includes many sub-fields of study such areas as human development,
sports, health, clinical, social behavior and cognitive processes. Moreover, Psychology
aims to describe, explain, predict, and influence behaviour.
Sociology, from the Latin word “societus” (society) and the Greek word “logos”
(science or study or advanced study) or the science/study of society, was coined by
August Comte who is known as the father of Sociology. Demography is the scientific
study of human society and social interactions. Sociologists assume that behavior is
influenced by people’s social, political, occupational and intellectual groupings and by
the particular settings in which they find themselves at one time or another.
Demography is the branch of social science which deals with the size, structure,
and distribution of population, along with the spatial and temporal changes in them in
response to birth, migration, ageing and death. It is also the study of population over
time and over place. Demography is very useful for understanding social and
economic problems and identifying potential solutions.
The study of social science is important because its learning helps us gain
knowledge of the society we live in.

BASIC CONCEPTS AND PRINCIPLES OF SOCIAL SCIENCE THEORIES

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

Social theories are analytical frameworks, or paradigms, that are used to study
and interpret social phenomena. A tool used by social scientists, social theories relate
to historical debates over the validity and reliability of different methodologies.
Structural-functionalism or simply functionalism is a “framework for building
theory that sees society as a complex system whose part works together to promote
solidarity and stability. This approach looks at both social structure and social
functions.
Marxism is a method of socioeconomic analysis that views class relations and
social conflict using a materialist interpretation of historical view social transformation.
It originates from the works of 19th-century German philosopher Karl Marx and
Friedrich Engels.
Symbolic Interactionism is a sociological theory that develops from practical
considerations and alludes to people’s particular utilization of dialect to make images.

DOMINANT APPROACHES AND IDEAS

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

This topic introduces some key concepts and approaches in the Social
Sciences, namely Structural Functionalism, Marxism, Symbolic and Interactionism. It
highlights the seamless interconnectivity of the different approaches in the Social
Science disciplines while focusing on the process and applications of this approach in
critical development.
Structural Functionalism is a perspective in sociology that sees society as a
complex system whose parts work together to promote unity and stability. The best
way to understand this idea is by analogy to a human body. Just as the brain, heart,
and lungs in the human body work together to maintain human life, social institutions
such as education, family, and law work together in order to maintain society.
To maintain stability and order in society, structural functionalism emphasizes
the importance of value consensus-of people having shared norms and values. For
instance, one of the major purposes of religion is to reaffirm people’s adherence to
certain core social values. Such adherence helps maintain unity and social cohesion.
On the other hand, Marxism is a school of thought that focuses on the ways by
which access to scarce resources creates inequalities among different groups of
people. Marxism is essentially a critique of the hegemony of the dominant classes and
of the oppression of the working classes.
Symbolic interactionism is an approach focusing on the everyday interactions
between individuals. The use of the word symbolic suggests an important
distinguishing feature of the approach. It emphasizes that people communicate and
interact using common set of symbols which members of the group understand.
Symbolic interactionism emphasizes the importance of interaction in creating
meaning. Through interaction with one another, people learn the meaning behind
symbols. It is the more specific process from which individuals absorbs and
understand what particular symbols stand for since symbols represent or stand for

BASIC CONCEPTS AND PRINCIPLES OF SOCIAL SCIENCES IDEAS

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis was founded by Sigmund Freud. Freud argues that human

behavior is the result of the interactions among three component parts of the mind:
the id, ego, and superego. This theory places great emphasis on the role of
unconscious psychological conflicts in shaping behavior and personality.

Three Parts of the Mind:

Id: The id operates at an unconscious level and focuses
solely on instinctual drives and desires. Two biological
instincts make up the id, according to Freud: eros, or the
instinct to survive that drives us to engage in life-sustaining
activities, and thanatos, or the death instinct that drives
destructive, aggressive, and violent behavior.

Ego: The ego acts as both a conduit for and a check on the
id, working to meet the id’s needs in a socially appropriate
way. It is the most tied to reality and begins to develop in
infancy;

Superego: The superego is the portion of the mind in which

morality and higher principles reside, encouraging us to act
in socially and morally acceptable ways.

RATIONAL CHOICE THEORY
Rational Choice Theory states
that individuals use rational
calculations to make rational choices
and achieve outcomes that are aligned
with their own personal objectives.
These results are also associated with
an individual’s best, or self-interests.
Using rational choice theory is expected to result in outcomes that provide people with
the greatest benefit and satisfaction given the choices available.
Rational Choice Theory assumes that individuals are rational actors using
rational information to try to actively maximize their advantage in any situation and
therefore consistently trying to minimize their losses.
Assumptions of Rational Choice Theory
Individualism – It is individuals who ultimately take actions. Individuals,
as actors in the society and everywhere, behave and act always as
rational beings, self-calculating, self-interested and self- maximizing.
Optimality – Individual choose their actions optimally, given their
individual preferences as well as the opportunities or constraints with
which the individual faced.
Structures - Structures and norms that dictate a single course of action
are merely special cases of rational choice theory. In other words, the
range of choices in other circumstances differs from choices in a strong
structural circumstance, where there may be only one choice.
Self-Regarding Interest – It states that the actions of the individual are
concerned entirely with his or her own welfare.
Rationality –All individuals act in ways that would benefit them more;
every individual is most like to undertake courses of actions that they
perceive to be the best possible

INSTITUTIONALISM
Institutionalism, in the
social sciences, an approach
that emphasizes the role of
institutions. William Richard
Scott defines institutions as
social structure that have
attained a high degree of
resilience. It is composed of
three institutional pillars: cultural
cognitive, normative and regulative elements that together with associated activities
and resources provide stability and meaning to social life.
56
Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times
Three Institutional Pillars
Cultural Cognitive Institutions –It guides behavior through deeply
entrenched assumptions and conceptions of the “way the world is”.
Normative Institutions –It guides behavior through social norms of
acceptability and morality.
Regulative Institutions –It is understood to guide behavior through the
force of formal rules and sanctions.
Institutions are both formal and informal.
Formal institutions include the written constitution, laws,
policies, rights and regulations enforced by official authorities.

Informal institutions are

(the usually unwritten)
social norms, customs or
traditions that shape thought and behavior.

In practice, formal and informal rules and norms can be complementary,

competing or overlapping. Whether they are relatively more strong/weak or
inclusive/discriminatory is likely to depend on context. In some cases, informal
institutions undermine formal ones; in others they substitute for them. Informal social
norms often shape the design and implementation of formal state institutions. (Leftwich
& Sen, 2010; Berman, 2013).

Key Features of Institutionalism

1. It is brought to life by people and organizations.
2. It provides a relatively predictable structure for everyday social,
economic and political life. Institutions shape people’s incentives (or
calculations of returns from their actions) and behavior.
3. It leads to enduring patterns of behavior over time but they also change.
Institutions are constantly being reformed through people’s actions.
Institutional change structures the way societies evolve. However,
institutionalized behaviors can be hard to change.
4. It produces positive or negative development outcomes. This depends
on the kinds of relations and behaviors that institutions enable, and the
outcomes for the enjoyment of rights and allocation of resources in
society.

Feminist theory
Feminist theory is the extension of feminism into theoretical, fictional, or
philosophical discourse. It aims to understand the nature of gender inequality. It
examines women’s and men’s roles, experiences, interests, chores, and feminist
politics in a variety of fields. Feminist theory focuses on analyzing gender inequality.
Themes explored in feminism include discrimination, objectification (especially sexual
objectification), oppression, patriarchy and others.

Definition of terms:

a. Feminism is a range of social movements, political movements, ideologies that

aim to define, establish and achieved the political, economical, personal and
social inequality of the sexes.
b. Gender ideology is concerned with normative belief about the proper roles for
and fundamental nature of women and men in human societies. The distinction
between sex and gender in central to the concept of gender ideology.
c. Gender inequality acknowledges that men and women are not equal and that
gender affects an individuals’ living experience. These differences arise from
distinction in biology, psychology, and cultural norms. While many factors that
explain that sex differentials in mortality and morbidity, a key determinant in
gender inequality. It manifest the different ways, such as unequal access to
resources, power, education and discrimination and discriminatory socio-
cultural practice.
d. Gender role is the role or behaviour learned by person as appropriate to their
gender, determined by the prevailing cultural norms. Example: girls and women
are generally expected to dress in typically feminine ways and be polite,
accommodating and nurturing. Men are generally expected to be strong,
aggressive, and bold

e. Gender is a cultural meanings attached to being masculine and feminine, which

influences personal identities, examples; man, woman, transgender, intersex,
gender queer etc.
f. Sex is biological traits that society associates with being male and female.
HERMENEUTICAL PHENOMENOLOGY
Hermeneutical phenomenology is a research method use in qualitative
research method in the field of education and other human sciences, for example
nursing science. Hermeneutic is oriented in history and relative meanings, and
phenomenology according to Edward Husserl sense, it is oriented to universal and
absolute essences. The basic theme of hermeneutic phenomenology are
“interpretation”, “textual meaning”, “dialogue”, “pre-understanding” and
“tradition”(Hedegger, Gadamar, and Ricoeur). Etymologically the roots of the word
hermeneutics lie in the Greek verb hermeneuein, which is generally translated as
58
Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times
“interpret’ or “understand” (Crotty, 1998; Palmer, 1969). The noun hermeneia means
the utterance or explication of thought; and the name Hermes, refers to the playful,
mischievous, “trickster” Hermes (Caputo, 1987; Grondin, 1995; Moules, 2002). As a
divine, wing-footed messenger of the gods. Hermes was gifted with the ability to
translate or interpret messages from the gods into a form that human could understand.
This process of bringing messages from beyond our own realm of experience into a
humanly intelligible form involves language.
Definition of terms:
1. Hermeneutics is the theory and methodology of interpretation,
especially the interpretation of biblical texts, wisdom, literature, and
philosophical text. Hermeneutics is more than interpretative principles
on methods we sort to when immediate comprehension fails.
2. Phenomenology is the study of structure of consciousness as
experiences from the first-person point of view. The cultural structure of
an experience, is it intentionally, its being directed toward something, as
it is an experience of or about some object.

HUMAN –ENVIRONMENT SYSTEM

Human-environment system. System which combine both human and natural

components to show complex interactions, and feedback between them, are called
human-environment systems. The most internationally accepted framework for
studying such systems is the DPSIR model (drivers, pressures, state, impact,
response). This framework for human-environment systems recognizes the human
activities which place pressure on the environment and how these pressures modify
the current state of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere. This
leads to impacts on the environment as well as on social and economic systems. In
turn, human society attempts to problem- solve in order to remove, reduce or prevent
the drivers and pressures, restore the state of the environment and mitigate impacts.
The diagram below provides a modified version of this model which can be used to
assess the causes and impacts of environmental change and the strategies
implemented to manage them.
1. Humans has the capacity to interact with its environment. Humans and
the environment have that mutual interaction with each other. Humans
have the capacity to change or influence the balance of the society.
Humans always have the capacity to adapt to its environment.
2. Environment is a complex of many variables which surrounds man as
well as the living organisms. Environment includes water, air, and land
and the interrelationship which exist among that act upon an organism
or an ecological community and ultimately determine its form and
survival.

together with the relationships among them that permit the identification
of a boundary-maintaining entity or process.

DISCIPLINES AND IDEAS IN SOCIAL
SCIENCES

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

KEY CONCEPTS AND APPROACHES IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

In the disciplines of social sciences, theories and approaches are extremely

important as they provide social scientists an anchor for their interpretation of social
phenomena. These theories will also provide an analytical scheme in examining and
understanding variables such as socio-cultural, economic and political conditions.
Let’s make a quick review on these approaches.
Psychoanalysis refers to a theory of the mind and its direct connection to
personality and behavior. The field of psychoanalysis has been heavily influenced by
the works of Sigmund Freud.

While routinely questioned and criticized, its approach in understanding human

behavior remains relevant today especially for the treatment of deep-seated mental
illnesses. As part of the social sciences, psychoanalysis provides an alternative lens
in understanding the complexity of human behavior through the context of personality,
consciousness and ideology.

70
Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times
The Rational Choice Theory explains that human action and behavior are
products of choice. Individuals rationalize their situations by processing between the
most beneficial choice and the lesser individual cost.
Rational Choice theory banks on
the key idea that humans are actively
calculating the pros and cons of a
particular choice, which affects the
type of behaviors that they exhibit.
These choices are often determined
by an individual’s preferences and the
extent by which he or she perceives
them as immediate needs or wants.

This theory remains relevant today in providing an analytical lens for

understanding the choices that humans make, especially with regards to deviant acts.
On the other hand, the theory of institutionalism allows for a discourse on how
institutions affects the decisions of humans within a frame of society. Today, this theory
finds its relevance in creating opportunities for growth and development among
institutions whether in the micro or macro context.

Feminism studies gender and its relation to power; a sociological perspective

and a philosophy that aims to promote gender equality, social justice and women’s
rights.Gender Ideology is a social divide that establishes perceived roles for men and
women, and relegating them to specific roles.

71
Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times
COMMON STERIOTYPES:
BOYS GIRLS
• Go to gym • Go to beauty parlor
• Go to office • Sit at home
• Blue • Pink
• Play with ball • Play with doll

GENDER INEQUALITY

• Refers to unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals based on their gender.

• There is gender inequality when the perceived role of women subordination to
men reflects hiring procedures and requirements
• Example: a secretarial post accepting only female applicants
• Salaries are also unequal when it comes to men and women.

The issue of gender equality is one of these neglected issues that have finally
been addressed by scholars and activists alike. Today, women and other sectors of
society who are prey to the dissociating and selective systems instituted by powerful
classes are still fighting for their rights, which allows for the rebirth of a new form of
feminist movement.

Hermeneutical Phenomenology is a philosophy of and method for interpreting

human experiences as a means to understand the question of what is to be human.
“People understand new things through the prism of what they know” summarizes
hermeneutic phenomenology. Hermeneutics phenomenology highlights the value of
experience in the making of meaning and concepts.
Lastly, the Human-environment systems are the interdisciplinary approaches
which study the complex interactions among human and environment systems. This
approach provides a diverse source of interplay between humans and their
environment. Today, this theory remains relevant in addressing environmental issues
that are either created by human populations or affecting their existence.
These are some of the important theories and approaches in social sciences
which will help you examine the country’s socio-cultural, economic and political
conditions.
