Graphing Points Peformance Task

The document provides instructions for a performance task that requires students to graph a minimum of 10 and maximum of 25 coordinate points on the Cartesian plane to create a picture, with at least one point in each quadrant, and then write an email to a friend including the graphed points, key terms, and instructions for accessing a password-protected computer using the graphed points.

Graphing Points on the Coordinate Plane Performance 2016-

Task 2017
Name: _____________________________________________ Date: __________________

You love math so much that you have programmed your computer so that your password requires you to graph
points on a coordinate plane in a specific order in order to access the computer. Your challenge is to create a
picture of a familiar shape or figure on the coordinate plane using coordinate points that will be the password d
to your computer. Like any password, there are rules! Your password must consist of a minimum of 10
different points, but no more than 25 points! You must include at least one point in each of the four
quadrants. You will submit a copy of the ordered pairs graphed and connected on the coordinate plane.

On a separate sheet of notebook paper, you will make a list of these points, in the order in which they are to
be connected on the coordinate plane. If you need to break the connection of the points (i.e. lift your pencil to
start somewhere else), write STOP where this break occurs in your list of ordered pairs. Keep in mind that if
you need to connect your last point to the first point, you will need to list the first point again.

Then, write a well-written e-mail to your best friend giving instructions on what he/she must do to get into your
computer. Your e-mail must include the words ordered pair, quadrant, and coordinate plane, and these
terms must be used correctly. Your e-mail should be a minimum of five sentences in length and must either be
typed or handwritten neatly on lined paper.

Paper clip your list of ordered pairs, graph paper with your ordered pairs graphed and connected, and
your e-mail to the scoring rubric.

BEFORE you turn in your performance task:

______ Have you stapled your graph paper, list of ordered pairs, and e-mail to this sheet?

______ Does your list of ordered pairs contain at least 10 different points, but no more than 25?

______ Is your e-mail at least 5 sentences long and contain the words ordered pair, quadrant, and
coordinate plane?

______ Does your picture contain an ordered pair in each of the four quadrants?

______ Have you checked your ordered pairs to be sure they form a picture?

Task 2017
Instructions for Checking Ordered Pairs:

1) Go to the following web site: http://www.shodor.org/interactivate/activities/OrderedSimplePlot/

2) Underneath “Show,” click “Light Grid Lines.”
3) Type your list of ordered pairs in the box titled, “Data.” Separate each ordered pair by a comma.
4) If you need to lift your pencil to start a new, unconnected section of the picture, type “newgraph” on a
separate line in the data box. Keep in mind that if you need to connect your last point to the first point,
you will need to list the first point again.
5) Once completed listing your points, click “Plot/Update.” If your picture does not look like what you
want it to look like, edit your points so that they make the correct picture.

Reflection on Checking Ordered Pairs Activity:

1) Did your picture look like what you wanted it to? YES NO

If you answered “YES” above, STOP HERE. If you answered “NO,” continue with the questions
below.

2) If your picture did not look like it was supposed to, why didn’t it?

3) What did you need to change with your ordered pairs so that your picture did look like you wanted it to?
