Assignment About Design Problem Formulation

1. The document describes three design problems involving the formulation of optimal designs given certain constraints: 2. The first involves designing the radius of a cantilever beam subjected to a point load for minimum mass, ensuring the material does not exceed bending or shear stress limits. 3. The second involves determining the optimal dimensions of a can or cylindrical cup to enclose a specified volume using minimum sheet metal area. 4. The third concerns redesigning a heat exchanger to maximize heat transfer by optimizing the tube radius and number of tubes, given constraints on tube size and total cross-sectional area.

Assignment about design problem formulation

1- A cantilever beam is subjected to the point load

P as shown in Fig.1. It is required to formulate
the problem of designing the radius the beam R
for a minimum mass. The material should not
fail under bending stress or shear stress. The
maximum bending stress is calculated as  =
4PL/R2 and is not to exceed the allowable
bending stress a. The maximum shearing stress Fig.1 Cantilever beam
is calculated as:  = 4P/3R2 and is not to exceed
the allowable shear stress a. Use the following
data: P=10kN, L=5m, =7850kg/m3.
a = 250MPa, a = 90MPa.

2- It is required to formulate the optimum design of a can (closed at both ends) using
the smallest area of sheet metal for a specified interior volume of 0.001 m3. The
can is a right-angle circular cylinder with an interior height 'h' and radius 'r'. This is
for optimum can dimensions. If a cylindrical cup (closed at one end only) is to be
designed instead of the can, what would be the changes in the problem formulation
and will they change the optimum cup dimensions?

3- A company is in the process of redesigning its

parallel flow heat exchanger (cross-section
shown in Fig.2) of length 'L' to increase its
efficiency. The smallest available tube has a
radius of 10mm and all tubes must be of the
same size. Also the total cross-sectional area of
all tubes cannot exceed 0.2m2 (to ensure
adequate spacing inside the shell). Suggest a

proper formulation for obtaining the optimum
tube radius and number of tubes for maximum
heat transfer.
