INDUSTRY PROFILE
Broader Outine Of the Industry
Concrete pipe has a well established history and reputation for being a long lasting,
serviceable material. The Cloacae Maxima, built in about 180 B.C. as part of Rome's
main sewer system, was constructed mainly of stone masonry and natural cement
concrete. More than 2,000 years later, portions of the concrete sewer are still in use.

Modern day concrete sewer systems emerged during the mid-19th century when the
public became conscious of the need for sanitation to control the spread of disease.
The earliest recorded use of concrete pipe in the United States is a sewer installation
built in 1842 at Mohawk, N.Y. Other New England cities followed suit and installed
concrete pipelines in the second half of the nineteenth century. Many of these
concrete pipelines are still in use today.

SPUN PIPE Walter Reginald Hume (1873-1943) from Australia is the inventor of
Spun Pipe. Spun pipe is the concrete pipe making process using the centrifugal
process and also popularly known as spun process in many parts. This is most
traditional method of producing the concrete pipes.

RCC Spun pipe refers to Reinforced Concrete cement pipes. The Spun pipe process is
widely used in un-developed and developing countries. Generally these spun pipes
are used for sewage, drainage purposes.

The Spun pipe process is more labor oriented, exhaustive, less productive and quality
is largely depend on the operator skill. However this process has got its own
significance interms of social attachment as these units are operating since decades
by the earlier generations.

The developing countries are gradually shifted or shifting from Hume/ Spun process
to latest Vertical cast process. The new technology aims in terms of faster production
with limited labour and most importantly the better quality product with consistency.
Durable and sturdy the RCC Spun Pipes are used in various industrial and
agricultural sectors. Moreover, we offer these Spun Pipes in different dimensions and
sizes.
History of Spun pipes in India
The spun pipe or rcc pipes was started by , The Indian Hume Pipe Co. Ltd. (IHP) and
was established in 1926 with the object of manufacturing, popularising and marketing
Hume Pipes and allied products. A small mechanical workshop was also established
simultaneously for production of specialised equipment required for making
Reinforced Concrete Cement Pipes. Over a period of time the company has
developed Prestressed Concrete Pipes (Non–Cylinder), Prestressed Concrete Cylinder
Pipes, Bar Wrapped Steel Cylinder Pipes, Hume Steel Pipes, Welded Steel Penstocks,
Prestressed Concrete Railway Sleepers and specialised in execution of Turnkey
Water Supply Projects.

Today the company has a well spread out and wide network of over twenty factories
and forty projects in India. The company has earned a reputation for excellence
through employing modern technology, stringent quality control measures, timely
execution and continuous Research and Development. As a result the company's
products have found acceptance in highly competitive  markets. The company's
expertise is at work right from designing of custom made pipes to the company's total
engineering packages for pipeline projects.

The company is actively involved in the strengthening of the nation's infrastructure in

varied fields viz. Water Supply, Irrigation, Drainage, Power Generation and Rail
transport by executing numerous turnkey pipeline projects for Water Supply,
Sewerage and Hydroelectric Power Generation and supplying millions of sleepers for
railways in India. IHP has also executed neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka,
Burma & Iraq.

RCC Hume Pipes are used for sewerage, drainage, Culverts, irrigation, water
supply /transportation, service lines etc.According to BUREAU OF INDIAN
STANDARDS concrete pipes shall be classified as under:

NP2:- Reinforced Concrete Non-Pressure Pipes Used For: - Light-duty drainage and
irrigation/water transportation use, cross drains/culverts carrying light traffic.

NP3:- Reinforced Concrete Non-Pressure Pipes Used For: - Medium-duty drainage

and irrigation/water transportation use, service lines, cross drains/culverts carrying
medium traffic
NP4:- Reinforced Concrete Non-Pressure Pipes Used For: - Heavy-duty drainage and
irrigation/water transportation use, cross drains/culverts carrying heavy traffic.

In India first RCC SPUN PIPE Industry started in Bombay (Mumbai) in 1972.
Named as“BHARATH SPUN PIPES INDUSTRY”. At present in INDIA 6450
industries.

Market Potential: Public Health Engineering Department, Public Works

Departments, AgricultureAnd Forest Department, National Highways, Environment
Engineering Department,Panchayats Municipal Corporations are the bulk consumer’s
of RCC spun pipes. Most of the customers are approved civil contractors who are
executing the works of the Government Department and Public Sector Undertakings.
Presently government is giving stress on rural irrigation and improving methods of
water supply scheme, so the demand for pipes is increasing.
.Basis and Presumptions:
a) The basis for calculation of production capacity has been taken on single shift
basis on 75% efficiency
b) The maximum capacity utilization on single shift basis for 300 days a year.
During first year and second year of operations the capacity utilization is 60%
and 80% respectively. The unit is expected to achieve full capacity utilization
from the third yearonwards.
c) The salaries and wages, cost of raw materials, utilities, rents, etc. are based on
the prevailing rates in and around Chennai. These cost factors are likely to vary
with time and location.
d) Interest on term loan and working capital loan has been taken at the rate of 18
% on an average. This rate may vary depending upon the policy of the financial
institutions/agencies from time to time.
e) The cost of machinery and equipments refer to a particular make/model and
prices are approximate.
f) The break-even point percentage indicated is of full capacity utilization.
g) The project preparation cost etc. whenever required could be considered under
pre-operative expense

In 2009, Kashmir ranked 40th among sales and exporters. This situation can
be explained by the high import duty applied, and on the other hand, from the
low labor skills in operating the machines. According to data for index of
industrial production, growth is 16.7%.The spun pipe industry to grow further
in the coming years. Two important reasons for this are:
India’s large size.
India is irrigation country.

Production process
The reinforced cage is first prepared on the cage-winding machine by hand process.
The cage is then placed inside the pipe mould which is then hoisted up and mounted
horizontally on the turn unions. It is rotated by driving shaft with variable speed
arrangement, the rotation is kept slow in the beginning and then the speed is
increased. The concrete mixture for the RCC spun pipe is prepared in proportion of
1:2:5:2:5 of cement stone, metal and sand respectively. The cement concrete is fed
into the moulds during rotation which spreads inside evenly. The time required for
completion of this operation depends upon the diameter and class of the pipe. The
pipes are kept in the mould for 24 hours. On the following day the pipes are removed
from the moulds and submersed in water in the curing tank for about 15-20 days
depending upon the class of the pipe. The specimens of the pipes are subject to the
following tests viz:
(1) Hydrostatic pressure test
(2) Three edge bearing test
(3) Absorption test.

Mixture
According to mix design and regular checking aggregates, water and Cement are
used by weight. Instructions are written on boards for proper mixtures. Instructions
are given to consume mixture within 30 minutes for its proper strength. IS 456 is
followed for this

Molding: All moulds are properly cleaned from Hand Grinder after opening. Proper
supports aregiven for centering of
cages. {If it is higher dia 2 cages are
made as per IS: 458 and upper cage
isalways 75% of inner cage} Proper
oiling is done on moulds as well as on
bushes and rings. These areproperly
packed with tie rods and nut-bolts.

Manufacturing: After molding moulds are

properly kept on runners with the help of Chain
Pulleys.Initially while pouring the mixture RPM
of machine is very slow for proper pouring and
than RPM are up to 1500 as per the requirement of
IS: 458. When the proper spinning is done it
leaves extra water which gives the strength to the
pipe. After it, finishing of pipes is done by cutting
from rods and brushes.

Demolding: While demolding, with the help of Chain pulleys moulds are separated.
Moulds are demoulded after 24 hours for proper quality of pipes.

Marking: After manufacturing process, all pipes are marked and dated from
permanent marker.Supervisor record all these marked numbers in front of tagged
numbers and after wards these are stored in Computer by date and marked number
wise with the weigh of cages.

Curing: After Demoulding with the help of Trolleys, Hydra and ceilings pipes are
kept in curing tanks for proper curing. Rotation of pipes is done daily and 24 hours
Sprinklers are on. After 28 days curing pipes are taken out from tanks and storage is
done.

The industry produce NP2 & NP3 type pipes.

Swot Analysis

Strength
 Fire and weather resistance
 It can be constructed of any desired strength by proper mix design, thickness,
and reinforcement.
 Easily cast in situ with the help of special formwork.
 These pipes can withstand both tensile stresses (due to internal pressure) as
well as compressive stresses (due to external pressure).
 They are economical, hence used for every type of sewers
 Suitable for all types of water.
 Durable

Weakness
 The main disadvantage is that concrete pipes are easily corroded at the crown
because bacteria’s decompose organic matter present in sewage, hence release
Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) gas which then in presence of moisture
converts to Sulphuric acid, this acid then create small holes or patches which
may result in corrosion. Such corrosion is generally known as Crown corrosion
 They are heavy, hence transportation and installation cost is higher
 Corrosion by sulphate due to outside soil water
