Unit Learning Outcomes

LO1 Evaluate how a new highway route is identified, planned and designed

LO2 Assess the methods of earthwork operations, bridges and tunnelling which are used in connection with
the provision of highways

LO3 Justify the selection of pavement construction type for a given highway provision

LO4 Present a report that specifies improvements that can be made to a given highway infrastructure,
including maintenance techniques and planning

Assignment Brief and Guidance

Assignment Scenario:
You are employed as a graduate engineer for Consulting firm that has been awarded a contract for
the Ministry of Public Works and Housing. The contract involves the design of a new section of
highway that will include tunnelling works as explained below.

Task 1
You are required to review the design of a new service road that begins near point C intersecting with
the existing road at the marking (elev. 1416.00 feet/431.6 m.). The service road will end at point D
(elev. 1410.00 feet/429.8 m.). The point D is designed a telecommunication tower in the middle of
forest that is considered to be natural reserve where no major earthwork is expected. The vehicle
design is 2-axle vehicle with gross weight of 21 metric tons. The design speed of the road will be 80
km/hr. The gravitational force is 9.81 m/sec2. You are expected to define other design criteria to be
used including the maximum grade. Your Manager in the company wants to see all works related to
the geometric design (vertical and horizontal alignment and the cross-section). The road is expected
to carry low traffic volume (<1,000 vehicle per day) and based on this level, you are required to
determine the number of lane and their width. The proposed alignment needs to be revised; you are
requested to propose alternative design including justification. You are also required asked to
analyse the new route to determine the legal procedures that will be required.

Submittal/ Deliverable/ Assessment

You are expected to prepare and present a report that address route selection and design and the
related issues

Task 2
The alignment across a sensitive natural area that should be preserved as indicated above. Instead of
crossing the area at-grade, a tunnel or bridge is proposed. You are asked to make the necessary
comparison between the two options including the required all anticipated earthwork operations and
the required machinery and methods of construction. You are expected to discuss the relationship
between earthworks of both the tunnel and bridge. You need to critically analyse the design details for

the earthworks necessary for the new tunnel section of the highway (key details are only required).
Your report should include a method statement for the excavation and formation of the tunnel section
of the proposed route. According to Jordan environment impact assessment code, it is required to
arrange for and conduct public consultation for the project, and you are asked to prepare and deliver a
presentation for the project stakeholder that would address the comparison between different types of
crossing and related earthworks and the way to handle the cut and fill quantities.

Submittal/ Deliverable:
- Technical note (report) discuss and analyse design details for the earthwork operations,
bridges and tunnelling of a new highway. It should also provide a method of statement for the
forming of a tunnel section.

- Presentation to stakeholder that would address the comparison between different types of
crossing and related earthworks.
Task 3
The work involves pavement design, the design life of the project is 20 years, you are expected to
review design criteria. Based on your analysis, you are expected to recommend the appropriate
type of the pavement you should able to justify and defend the selection. The analysis should
include a trade-off between constructing flexible pavement versus and rigid pavement. The
evaluation should also cover the practical aspects (techniques and methods of construction for
providing pavement, taking into consideration that flexible pavements are more common in
Jordan.
Submittal/ Deliverable/ Assessment
A presentation that would summarise the selection of pavement type, design and construction
methods. The student will be given 10 minutes and the student should submit a hard copy of his
or her presentation.

Task 4
The existing road near the point “C” needs to be evaluated to define the major distresses and
faults. You need to define the main type of distresses that may exist. You are expected to suggest
monitoring procedures for the pavement conditions of the new highway including defining
intervention criteria for preventive and periodic maintenance regimes and to discuss the
techniques that may improve the effectiveness and conditions of the works. Select one of the
defects or problem and elaborate on improvement schemes that could enhance the road service
quality

Submittal/ Deliverable:
Technical note (report) presents evaluation methods to assess road conditions and remedial
measures to improve the operation conditions. The remedial measures include techniques for
highway improvement. The report should address monitoring techniques.
