Module 6: Activity No. 2 Experiment No. 5: Mini - Ice Plant Trainer Pull Down Test

The document describes two problems involving refrigeration capacity calculations. Problem 1 involves calculating the required refrigeration capacity in tons to cool 11,350kg of milk from 30C to 3C over 3 hours. Problem 2 involves calculating the volume of salt brine required to cool 100 packs of beef weighing 225kg each from 40C to 3.4C over 18 hours, with the final brine temperature being 1.7C. Both problems provide the relevant parameters such as mass, temperatures, heat capacities, and calculate the required refrigeration capacity or brine volume using the appropriate heat transfer equations.

Experiment No. 5: Mini – Ice Plant Trainer Pull Down Test

Name: Gamboa, Ariel C.

Student No. 20151157958

Problem No. 1:
A creamery must cool 11,350 kg of milk received each day from 30 deg C to 3 deg C in
3 hrs. What must be the capacity of refrigerating machine in tons of refrigeration?
Specific of milk is 3.92 kJ/kg K.

Given:
m s =11350 kg

kJ
C p s=3.92
kg ∙ K
T s=30 ℃

T e =3 ℃

Required:
QS

Solution:
Ref . Cap .=Q S+ Q g

( 113350hrskg )(3.92 kgkJ∙ K ) ( 30−3)=400 428 kJhr

QS =

QS =31.63 TOR
Problem No. 2:
Cold salt brine at – 2 deg C is used in a packing plant to chill beef from 40 deg c to 3.4
deg C in 18 hours. Determine the volume of brine required to cool 100 packs of beeves,
225 kg each if the final temp of brine is 1.7 deg C. (S.G. of brine= 1.05, specific heat of
brine= 3.77 kJ/kg K, specific heat of beef= 3.15).

Given:
m s =225 kg

T s=40 ℃

T e =3.4 ℃

kJ
C P s =3.15
kg ∙ K
kJ
C P b =3.77
kg ∙ K

Required:
VB

Solution:
QS +Q g=Q I where:Q g=0

mS C PS ( T S−T E )= p B V B C PB ( T FB −T EB )

Since, pB =SG pW then,

m S C PS ( T S−T E )=SG pW V B C PB ( T FB −T EB )

( 22518×100 ) ( 3.15 ) ( 40−3.4)=1.05 × 1000V × 3.77 ( 1.7+2 )
