Shaft Exercises Problem No. 2-1

The document provides a problem involving calculating the minimum shaft diameter for a steel shaft transmitting 75 HP at 150 rpm under various load conditions. It gives the shaft specifications, applied loads, and calculations to determine the required shaft diameters based on (a) an allowable flexure and shear stress, (b) for a commercial shaft with keyway under sudden load, (c) for gradually applied load using AISI C1030 steel, and (d) for gradually applied load using AISI C1095 steel and the ASME code for a keyed shaft. The calculations result in minimum shaft diameters ranging from 2.82 to 3.42 inches depending on the material and loading conditions.

Exercises Problem on Shafts

Name: Gamboa, Ariel C.

Student No. 20151157958

Problem:
A round steel shaft transmits 75 HP at 150 rpm and subjected to loadings as shown.
What minimum diameter is acceptable if shaft weight is 5 lb/ft?
a. For an allowable stress for flexure and shear are 10 ksi & 8 ksi respectively
b. For commercial shaft with keyway; suddenly applied load with minor shock
c. For AISI C1030 as rolled; gradually applied load
d. For AISI C1095 normalized; gradually applied load. Use ASME Code with
keyway.
