Exercises Problem No. 4 V - Belts

The document provides the solution to designing a V-belt transmission system to drive an irrigation pump from a diesel engine. It determines that 12 belts rated at 5.55 HP each are needed to transmit the 40 HP from the 2400 RPM engine to the 900 RPM pump, with a belt speed of 4250 feet/minute. Key calculations include determining the driver and driven sheave diameters and lengths, as well as transmission efficiency factors for tension (KL), angular (Kθ) and other (XS, YS, ZS) losses.

Exercises Problem on Belts

Student No. 20151157958

Problem:

An irrigation pump (reciprocating type) is to be driven by a 40 HP, 2400 rpm

diesel engine. The pump will be operated at 900 rpm. Design V- belt
transmission system for this equipment. Use a belt speed of 4250 ft/min.

Solution:

Design HP=Transmitted HP x SF where:SF=1.4

Design HP=40 HP x 1.4=56 HP−Type B

Design HP

Substituting∈eq .(1):

Rated HP ( 5.55 ) (0.97)(0.905)

No .of Belts=11.49

∴ Use No . of Belts=12
