Assignment 2

A business case is a documented argument to convince decision makers to approve an IT project. It affects the project by planning costs, strategies, and determining overall results. Common reasons for systems projects include improved service, new products/services, better performance, and internal/external factors. Internal factors are strategic plans, managers, user requests, existing systems, and the IT department. External factors are technology, suppliers, customers, competitors, the economy, and government. A feasibility study examines operational, technical, economic, and schedule factors through relevant tests to determine if a project is viable. Tangible benefits improve services while intangible benefits improve employee satisfaction. Project scope defines boundaries and constraints are requirements the system must meet. Constraints are classified

1. What is a business case? How does a business case affect an IT project?

A business case is an argument, usually documented, that is intended to convince a decision maker to approve
some kind of action.

A business case does affect an IT project by planning and deciding its cost, plans and strategies. The business case
can highly affect its overall result.

2. What are five common reasons for systems projects?

o Improved Service
o Support for New Products and Services
o Better Performance
o Internal Factors
o External Factors

3. What are some internal and external factors that affect systems projects?
Internal Factors
• Strategic Plan
• Top Managers
• User Requests
• Information Technology Department
• Existing Systems and Data
External factors
• Technology
• Suppliers
• Customers
• Competitors
• The Economy
• Government

4. What is feasibility? List and briefly discuss four feasibility tests.

A feasibility study examine operational, technical, economic, and schedule factors.

• Operational Feasibility
-It tests some factors on how a project will be operated, like management support, workforce, effectiveness and
many more.
• Technical Feasibility
-It tests if there is enough materials/resources like hardware and software, network, and technical expertise. And if
it can handle capacity for future needs and company growth.
• Economic Feasibility
-It tests the overall costs of a project(Staff, equipment, software, training, license, consulting and facility expenses).
• Schedule Feasibility
-While it test if the project schedule has conditions, risks, satisfaction or if it can control.
5. How do tangible benefits differ from intangible benefits?
Tangible benefits improves service while intangible benefits improves employee satisfaction.

6. What is project scope? What is a constraint? In what three ways are constraints classified?
-Project scope are the specific boundaries, or extent, of the project. A list of Must Do, Should Do, Could Do, and
Won’t Do in the project.
-A constraint is a requirement or condition that the system must satisfy or an outcome that the system must
achieve.

-Constraints are classified by Timing, Time, and Urgency.

7. Explain how you might use fishbone diagrams, Pareto charts, and XY charts in problem-solving. Be specific,
and describe the advantages of each tool
-A fishbone diagram is used to display the causes of a problem. Its advantage is it is easy to understand and you
will be able to identify the root cause of a problem. It helps you find ways or solutions.

-A Pareto chart is used to display the causes of a problem, in priority order. The advantage of Pareto chart is you
may be able to find solutions based on most important problems.

-An XY chart shows correlation between variables, its advantage is it helps analyze the problem by finding what
correlates in that problem.
